How sad. How utterly sick fetching! All this for a quid coin?

....very confused! Are people getting the wrong end of the stick here????

In England, most supermarkets use a £1 coin, specifically, to release a trolley. This encourages customers to return their trolley after use! This little disk can be clipped to a key ring so that you don't have to worry about having a coin with you. You shove in the disk and it pops back out at you when the trolley is returned. If you leave it in you loose the disk and someone else will pop it out so it doesn't ever benefit anyone!!! It seems like people think you are somehow using this disks instead of spending £1 and ripping someone off!

Fergus,

I (and some others it seems ) fail to see what you are getting wound up about.  No one is cheating anyone out of anything.

What is your problem here ?

Dave.

Actually people are being 'ripped off' from the use of tokens.

My wife reported that she- amongst others, had been robbed.
a £1 means nothing to us but some old age pensioner livin- or trying to live on what is a pittance, it is a sorry state.
If you are happy with creating a situation where more tokens are being produced, I'm not.

regards

Norman, thanks for your reply but I am still incredibly incredibly confused.

Are we talking about the same type of tokens since I can't see in the slightest how you can be ripped off by them. The police produce trolley tokens !!!!!! You put the trolley token in, you take your trolley, you return the trolley and you pull out the token.

Norman,

You still seem to be getting the wrong end of this.

As Raynerd says, you are only using the £1 coin or a token (home made or otherwise) to unlock the troley from the trolley park.
When you are finished you get your own coin or token back. This ensures that you put the trolley in the proper place and don't just leave it where your car was.
No one else would have got your £1.  It isn't a 'fee' to use the trolley. Nor is it equivelant to minting one Pound coins with the intention of using them to obtain goods or services.

I apologise if I have opened some old wound with this,  but I really do think you need to understand what is going on here.

Dave.

...a £1 means nothing to us but some old age pensioner livin- or trying to live on what is a pittance, ...

I should add that I too am a pensioner(68 years old) living on 80% of the state pension. Plus my wifes part time minimum wage income.

As usual Norman you have no idea about what your talking about .  :loco:

The token /£1 coin stops with the trolley you are pushing your grocery's around in , so how can anyone be ripped off ,

My wifes token

fook me it even has a trolley on the reverse side .

Rob,

Morrisons in Killingworth- for starters. Not talking about ethereal place which no one has heard about. I don't intend to prattle on much further but ask yourself how do trolleys mysteriously appear in places far away from their shop? Nobody but an idiot is going to expect that someone is going to put a quid coin it- and dump it- perhaps in a boating lake( Killingworth)- I hit one That's another story!.

As for the offer of a couple of tokens, might I politely decline an offer of charity- or whatever

You can release your coin or token with a wooden lolley stick or anything similar;  it's not rocket science.

My last words on the subject.

Any other creative uses for 2" round delrin out there? I need a better reason to change the blade on my band saw to cut the bugger up! How about hockey pucks for midgets? :loco:

Yes, that's probably wise.

The changewheels on small Chinese lathes are usually Delrin or a similar acetal, and metric Mod 1, so your 2" bar could be turned into extra gears of 49T or less, Chuck. I suppose it may be easier to cut teeth in acetal blanks than in metal ones.

You can use it for distributor caps etc. It's not a bad HV dielectric. Not the best but pretty good at resisting tracking.

Shame about that. I was going to mention that Londoners refer to a counterfeit token as a 'Flakey Tokey'.
In fact IIRC they had a song; .... Put your Flakey Tokey in, Take your Flakey Tokey out. In, Out, In Out, Wave it all about ... etc etc ..
But I won't as it's forbidden ....

There we go, good ideas all.  Rob, I've seen that chart before but lost it in a drive crash. Saved it to my info pile, thanks.

Just to add for you guys back on the eastside of the pond Around here Aldi's is the only one locally that has the coin unlocker. It is our .25¢ piece or a quarter of a dollar. And it amazes me how many people don't bother with getting the quarter back. I generally take in a cloth bag as I don't buy much there. Also I take my folding luggage type trolley in when I buy the 4 or 5 cases of water. Only have to handle the cases twice instead of 4 times.

Man a pound that's $1.61 at the current exchange rate. :headbang:
