John, what a brilliant video, I did my training with firm that built machines that size. In those days they built two machines one for turning, followed by one for grinding the crankshafts. At the time they used state of the art electronics, but nothing to compare with NC and the sophisticated tooling shown in the video.

                                                                                                             Very Interesting      David

Thanks for posting, John!

Still modifying bits of metal... Occasionally, making an improvement!

John, thanks for the link - I didn't feel the need to fast forward through any of it - brilliant.

David, there's a picture of a Cravens Crank Sweep Cutting Machine at http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/File:Im1901Eing-pi.jpg which uses a cutter similar to the one in the video.

Gracesguide has many photos and history of some of the UK's biggest and best engineering companies - almost all now gone!

Wonder if there is a call centre to ring up and ask where all the big engineering firms have gone ?

Hang on just done a Google, yes there is one.

Anyone else wonder how many kg's of chips they made?

All i can say is the chips from that machining is more metal than i've used this far... And i've used a bit...

Thanks a bunch for sharing, i really enjoyed it!
Henning

Just because i can't, doesn't mean i shouldn't?

OT for crank grinding but on the subject of company shut-downs, I saw this posted the other day regarding the final shut-down of Pyestock.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2270038/Goodbye-Pyestock-Haunting-images-iconic-home-British-engineering-tested-Concorde-engines-2-000mph.html

Fascinating and rather sad.
