My shop
« on: March 01, 2009, 08:06:28 PM »
Hi everyone, well I took the day off Friday to finally get my new mill out of storage and into my shop.  Our fine member and I hope a friend now Steve Hucks made a 1 1/2 hour drive down to help me move in into the shop and we were able to get it exactly placed where I wanted it.  For the most part all went well.  ;D  We did experience one moment of butt cheek pucker but it all ended well with no damage. :o

This mill was bought new in April 2006 along with all the goodies that I got with it.  It was in a custom motor cycle shop that didn't fair very well with the economy here in the Lansing Mi area.  It had very little use and I still had clear plastic covering over the name plates and some cosmoline to clean off when I got it. The Kurt vise had been stored in a storage pod and was pretty heavily rusted on the top of the movable jaw when I got it.  After some like stoning and some PB plaster it came out pretty well and top of the jaws are less than the .001 advertised tolerance so all is well.

I finally moved some stuff around and was able to tuck a small desk in this corner.  I still have this wall that needs some covering and paint but the shop is getting close to being done.  I hope to put up something on the ceiling this summer and then add more insulation up there.

I took pictures of what is outside of the heated portion of the shop but they came out worse then these that you are seeing here.  Anyway out in that portion of the shop I have the welding table, MM251 welder, torches, Jet 7x10 band saw, an old bench top drill press, 10 ton press, the 3 phase rotary converter, coffee pot, small fridge and microwave oven.

I will post more later, right now the mill has all been lubed, trammed and the vice has been squared up to it's time to cut some metal.:))

I need more tool post holders for the lathe so I think I will be making a few of those this evening and tomorrow...

Take care all.

Edited to add that the metal cable that was laying on the floor when I took the pics has now been secured to the wall behind the mill...:)

Thanks Eric, we bought the property 5 years ago and had the barn and cabin built.  It's been a dream of ours for 30 years.  With the daughters both out of college and on their own we decided it was time for us to get back out to the country.  It's a lot of work on upkeep but we knew that going in.:)

Summer time I don't get as much shop time as I want but hey it's a give and take thing.  By next winter I hope to have the welding area all sealed up and heated as well.

Take care...

Bob

New addition to the shop
« Reply #7 on: April 26, 2009, 01:11:14 PM »
Just wanted to update my pics.  Yesterday my oldest daughter showed up with a window air conditioner she had in her apartment in Boston.  She was here last week and I was showing her and her fiance the Jet Mill and the walls I put up.  She pointed at the Hot Dawg furnace I have hanging from the ceiling and asked if it was the air conditioner and I told her no I hadn't located a used one yet for the window.  She said that they had one they bought for the apartment in Boston and I could have this one.:)) ;D  Even with the ceiling fan and dehumidifier going in the summer it gets to hot in here to due much in the humid temps here in MI.  It kept the rust at bay but that was about it.  Looks like I can hang out in here year round now.:)

I knew they had one because I took it out of the window in Boston when I moved them back but I thought they sold it when they bought their home here in Michigan. ???

Now the wife is concerned about the electric bill ::) ::) ::)

California??? nope sometimes I wish I was especially after this last winter season....was way to cold for way to long for me.  We get the hot humid weather here and from June through August the heat in the shop is unbearable most of the time.

Time to move the airconditioner to the wall
« Reply #10 on: July 11, 2009, 09:29:25 PM »
I haven't gotten around to finishing the D1-4 because I decided it was time to move the air conditioner to a wall.  I had one wall yet that didn't have wall covering on it, just house wrap on the one side and plastic on the other with insulating in between.  I used metal studs for the interior walls and I never did care for them.  I decided to buy a couple of 2x4x10 studs and replace the metal studs with these where the air conditioner was to go.  Well one thing led to another and the next thing I knew I had all the house wrap remove, plastic, and the insulation pulled out and I replaced all the metal studs.  Next I went and bought paint and wall covering and I am now putting on the last coat of paint.  I have more staining left to do on the cabin so I will get up very early tomorrow and have the last coat of paint on the walls before I have to start staining again.

Here are some shots of the shop in transition. Once I get all the paint on and things back where they belong I will take the finished pictures.

Who's been a busy boy then Bob.

I think the last time we talked you were just going to do a little bit of restaining, looks like you got carried away, or was it a "it came away in my 'and boss" and you had to carry on as more bits fell off.

I used to hate putting those damned noggins in, always ended up hitting a digit.

John, the I just finished the staining today.  The weather kept me from staying at it, so I kinda got carried away with the shop face lift.  I had one coat of paint on the other 3 walls and now all of them have two nice coats on them, I gotta make sure my hands are clean for the next 30 days because I can wash the walls till then..( :(  I still have lots to hang back up and reorganize so I am getting back to it.  Final pics coming soon...;)

Well the wall is finished, all walls have 2 coats of paint and I have run a pipe through the wall for shop air::))

Here it is ready for the electrical.

This is what it looks like now.  I moved the lathe which is to the left of the desk back against the wall and it opened the room up just a bit.  I also swapped the desk with the work bench so I wasn't backing my chair into the grinder handle.

This wall was only partially painted before and there was no trim around the doors.  I still need to paint the trim.....someday..:)

I really like having the white board behind the mill like this.  It comes in very handy when making notes of dimensions or sketching a part out.

I found a metal bracket in the other part of the shop and hung my tool post holder on it.  I also moved the collect rack.  I think I am going to like this set up much better.

Darren and Eric thanks, I have another one and it will be hung on a wall in the welding part of the barn.  It's come a long ways since the two car garage shop I was working in.  I feel very fortunate to have the room I have and machines I do although I did plenty well enough in the cramped garage.

Thank you Bernd,  I feel like it is slowly coming together.  I have a cork board above my desk and another white board that I will mount on a wall in the welding area.

Hey Kenneth..thanks.  I really enjoy it.  I have to build another wall to seal off the room I am doing my finishing/anodizing in.  I spend way to much time out there and I hear about it sometimes....:)

The white board and cork board are to help me with my CRS problems..:)

Thanks Nelson,
The metal studs are gone now...I replaced them all with wood.  The ones I used were to flimsy.

I prefer wood to work with, because it is what I know, but a lot of people prefer the metal because it goes in fast and is easier to level and get straight, from what they tell me and has holes for wires, etc. Wood gives you a better nailing surface, though.
