just arrived
« on: March 04, 2009, 05:43:07 PM »
just found this place, already had an education after half an hour quadrupled my understanding of getting my mini lathe into shape.

the name reel jon refers to what i spend most of my time doing, modifying fishing reels
spent 30+ years printing, what a waste of time :( since getting a mini lathe i realise what i should have done at 15  when i got indentured.

Welcome RJ,

Just keep on reading, you never know what will take your interest next.

Sounds like, even though you are a late starter, you are going to enjoy murdering a few bits of metal.

And I am sure a few of the lads would like to see a little insight into what your speciality is.

Hi Jon,

Don't fret about the Mini lathe, the one John modified was is a few years old and unusually badly made/machined. Even so it could turn out quite acceptable parts. Just a couple of areas it struggled with.
Even so, there is quite a bit you can do to tune it up quite easily.

Welcome to the forum and please do show us what you do with the reels, quite like a bit of fishing myself being near the sea and all....
You will find it a distinct help… if you know and look as if you know what you are doing. (IRS training manual)

Hi Jon!

Welcome to the collective  :borg:

I do a lot of work on a mini lathe... including some production on some bike bits. A lot of production. With some proper tuning and such, it is a capable machine.

Soooo... fishing reels eh? What type? I used to be an avid fly fisher when I lived in Maine. I still get some fishing in at the in-laws lake house during the summer.

Mind showing use some of your work? I wouldn't mind seeing if there are some things to do to my open face caster.I can add a board for outdoor type activities... I know I have a few projects planned that would fit in perfect there.

Eric

Welcome aboard Jon  You'll have fun here

I've got a few old UK manufactured reals tucked away:- Intrepid, Allcock etc, I had an uncle who was a toolmaker at Crewe railway work, when the first Allcock centre pin came out he got a look at one, then set to and made  :hammer: a batch of 6 that he distributed/sold, came across one at a boot sail, tempted to buy it but cash was short at the time so had to pass.

Looking forward to seeing some photos of your collection.

Cheers

Hi Jon  I'm brand new here too, but it seems like a really fun and friendly place to be  :)

Fishing, OMG, there's something else I would love to get back into but am desperately trying to avoid for fear of diluting my free time beyond breaking point

Even went so far as to buy an Intrepid Black Prince from Ebay a few years ago -- not a great reel but I used one as a boy. Cost a fortune then: -19/6 (ie nineteen shillings and sixpence!).

Nice one Jon,

Fishing is now going hi-tech. A bit different to my 70's days with a Mitchell Match and a 14ft hollow glass rod.

I will be moving out of my comfort zone after today when my 4 jaw independant chuck arrives, a friend has asked me to make some parts for his paper cutting guillotine which is being moved and refurbished, the cutting stick that the blade comes down onto is gripped in place in its channel by 4 square blocks that tighten with eccentric adjusters, this will be my first go at anything machined off center, the excitement is tangible :headbang:.

Welcome to here Jon!

It`s a great place.....

I`ve spent a lifetime machining metal, my way........ Now I`m relearning / resizing it all over again, on here.....

Just, enjoy.......
