Interesting way to make cores. Where did you get the sodium Silicate?

Could you just enclose the cores in a plastic bag with an open jar of seltzer water to cure them?

Or maybe some bicarbonate of soda in water and add a little vinegar?
I love it when a Plan B comes together!

John

No need to appologize for making more video. We love them and enjoy watching and learning from each and every one of them. I'm glad to see that you have got it figured out how to embed the link now as well.

Thanks for taking the time required to make and edit the video's. It seems so easy when you are watching but I realise it is a different story on the other side of the camera.  :D :D

Cheers

Another fascinating video.

I remember sodium silicate or "waterglass" from my childhood when it was used for preserving eggs and making "chemical gardens", but had no idea that it reacted with carbon dioxide in this way. For anyone else who is interested, I found a (not too technical) description here: http://www8.svsu.edu/~rtuttle/FRG/HOWTOs/Sodium%20Silicate%20Coremaking.pdf

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

If I remember correctly John, I was using 4% sodium silicate by weight - not done it in the last 6 years as my foundry stuff is still not unpacked, but I do have two drums each of 25 litres of the stuff!
