Simple QRTP

This is a simple QRTP design I'm trying out. I made it to work with existing tool holders that came with an A to Z tool post. It works by expanding the male dovetail on the post with a cap screw that bears against one side of the dovetail. The slot running along the side allows that side of the dovetail to flex enough  (.010")  to firmly bind the tool holder. It was pretty easy to make and seems to work pretty well.

That's pretty cool.

Question would it have better bearing on the base on your lathe if it was made from square stock instead of round?

Probably, but it was the material I had on hand, also it is still larger than the A to Z tool post.

I know it is a long time since you originally posted but can you give an update on how it has performed. Would you change anything?

As you tighten the Allen bolt, I presume the slots closes up? This in turn grips the holder? ( think I'm missing summat here.....)

Nice bit of machining btw.....

John,
I think the screw pushes the slit apart and expands the dovetails that grips the holder.

Hi Mike, The design didn't work as expected, it never held the tool holder tight enough. I fiddled with it a bit, but couldn't get it to where I was confident it would hold. I still think it's a viable design though and with a different pitch bolt and re-positioned slit it might work.
