Friday, all day, just as a member of the public thought. ARC isn't doing shows any more.

Well that's a shame...I guess its a sign of the hard times...

From memory there were less traders when I went year before last ( Myford wern't there IIRC for one)

If the trend continues it wont be worth going

I guess the fact that there's a show in March has a certain impact too on attendees?

I will be going with 4 or 5 blokes from "men in sheds" but I don't yet know what day I will be going. Age UK class these sort of shows as "educational" so they buy the tickets and provide free transport. :headbang:  How can I refuse ?

Cheers Dek. :med:

Not so much hard times John but changing times.
At one time people would wait for the shows and roll up with big shopping lists.
Nowdays things have speeded up and internet sales are way up.

Also remember whilst you are away from base for what is basically a week by the time you have included loading, setup day and unloading you are loosing sales world wide just to cater for 3 days to a limited area of one country.

OK at one time it was worth it as that area was heavily condensed because of the show and you only lost a few rest of the country sales via post or in person at the shop.
Now with the hight level of continuous web sales you are cutting your throat leaving base.

I'm afraid it's a sign of the times. I know that other traders have also cut down either stand space or not going at all.

There are also now too many shows per year to sustain the hobby. I can see in future years the shows being smaller and more model oriented but how that will pay organisers I don't know.

I like Harrogate, i think it's the best show of the year.

Manchester show won't happen next year after just two shows, as reported in ME. Shame really. I remember going to shows with my dad about forty-five years ago and when I got back into model engineering last year it was like a trip back in time. The Manchester show seemed to have quite a few things to interest youngsters. The RC cars were very popular. Looks like it'll have to be expensive weekends away at Harrogate and Leamington Spa for me and the wife from now on. :D

I'll be there on Friday by the way.

I didn't know that, Gary. Yes, it is a shame, but it didn't really seem to take off in the sense of attracting ME exhibitors or traders. Even so, it had the great advantage for me of being only 10 minutes away.

I'm sure John S is right. For the (relatively) small traders we deal with, it is getting not worthwhile closing up shop, arranging transport and finding local accommodation in these days of selling on-line.

While we are on the subject of shows, are there any other events in the UK that members think are worth travelling to that are of a general interest to model engineers or Mad Modders. I've been to the Harrogate and Midlands shows. The London shows are a bit too far I think. Sometimes traction engine rallies or preserved engine open days have model stuff tacked on and I've been to a few of these.

Anything else I'm missing?

Yeah was going to say all the traction engine rallies are good, Beamish open air museum, Beam engines at High-Conniscliffe and Rhyhope. Think there is a model engineering type show in pickering now? Also there will be the open days of the various model engineering clubs - these aren't often well advertised and you need to be a member of a club to find out.

If you were willing to travel south then we try hard at Guildford to put on a good show. This year I would recommend staying clear of the model tent otherwise you might see yours truly making a right fool of herself  :)

Thanks Jo, if I'm feeling adventurous I'll bear it in mind. Takes a lot to persuade me to travel towards London. :)

I'm there Saturday, as usual.

We usually all meet by the big window, near the Chester stand, 12.00. Don't we?

Thanks, looks great, it's a large society then. Definitely tempted - i have given up trying to turn these things into family days out, wife and boys not interested so if I do Iwill save myself the hassle and just come on my own!

My wife and I had a hotel break in Harrogate in March and we were surprised how bad the traffic was. Fortunately, the ME Exhibition is a few miles outside the town centre.

I'm planning to go on the Saturday after getting back home from a mid-Wales caravan break on the Friday.
