Well that's a shame...I guess its a sign of the hard times...

From memory there were less traders when I went year before last ( Myford wern't there IIRC for one)

If the trend continues it wont be worth going

I guess the fact that there's a show in March has a certain impact too on attendees?

I will be going with 4 or 5 blokes from "men in sheds" but I don't yet know what day I will be going. Age UK class these sort of shows as "educational" so they buy the tickets and provide free transport. :headbang:  How can I refuse ?

Not so much hard times John but changing times.
At one time people would wait for the shows and roll up with big shopping lists.
Nowdays things have speeded up and internet sales are way up.

Also remember whilst you are away from base for what is basically a week by the time you have included loading, setup day and unloading you are loosing sales world wide just to cater for 3 days to a limited area of one country.

OK at one time it was worth it as that area was heavily condensed because of the show and you only lost a few rest of the country sales via post or in person at the shop.
Now with the hight level of continuous web sales you are cutting your throat leaving base.

I'm afraid it's a sign of the times. I know that other traders have also cut down either stand space or not going at all.

There are also now too many shows per year to sustain the hobby. I can see in future years the shows being smaller and more model oriented but how that will pay organisers I don't know.

I like Harrogate, i think it's the best show of the year.

Manchester show won't happen next year after just two shows, as reported in ME. Shame really. I remember going to shows with my dad about forty-five years ago and when I got back into model engineering last year it was like a trip back in time. The Manchester show seemed to have quite a few things to interest youngsters. The RC cars were very popular. Looks like it'll have to be expensive weekends away at Harrogate and Leamington Spa for me and the wife from now on. :D

I'll be there on Friday by the way.

I didn't know that, Gary. Yes, it is a shame, but it didn't really seem to take off in the sense of attracting ME exhibitors or traders. Even so, it had the great advantage for me of being only 10 minutes away.

I'm sure John S is right. For the (relatively) small traders we deal with, it is getting not worthwhile closing up shop, arranging transport and finding local accommodation in these days of selling on-line.

While we are on the subject of shows, are there any other events in the UK that members think are worth travelling to that are of a general interest to model engineers or Mad Modders. I've been to the Harrogate and Midlands shows. The London shows are a bit too far I think. Sometimes traction engine rallies or preserved engine open days have model stuff tacked on and I've been to a few of these.

Anything else I'm missing?

Yeah was going to say all the traction engine rallies are good, Beamish open air museum, Beam engines at High-Conniscliffe and Rhyhope. Think there is a model engineering type show in pickering now? Also there will be the open days of the various model engineering clubs - these aren't often well advertised and you need to be a member of a club to find out.

If you were willing to travel south then we try hard at Guildford to put on a good show. This year I would recommend staying clear of the model tent otherwise you might see yours truly making a right fool of herself  :)

My wife and I had a hotel break in Harrogate in March and we were surprised how bad the traffic was. Fortunately, the ME Exhibition is a few miles outside the town centre.

I'm planning to go on the Saturday after getting back home from a mid-Wales caravan break on the Friday.

Hi David,

I remember meeting you, Divided he ad, Craynerd, AussieJimG, John Stevenson and the late HS93 last year.

I'll put a bit of string through the wheel and hang it round my neck!

I've still to make one in metal. I keep thinking of a CNC lathe to profile them and then cutting out the spokes on the mill. Trouble is - I don't have a CNC lathe. (It should be possible to turn them on the mill so another project on the "to-do" list is to make an ER32 to Myford nose adaptor so I can attach a 3-jaw chuck. (Reminder to self - be careful not to try to run it at 10,000 rpm!))

I'm going to pick up a new ballscrew for the Z-axis on my mill tomorrow. When I get round to fitting it I should be able to run the Z-axis 4 or 5 times faster than with the Acme screw which is where much machining time is lost.

I did meet you at Harrogate a few years ago, I was introduced to you by Stew, who was showing you his (then) latest creations which were in the boot of his car. (now now you lot, engines I mean ) :hammer:   So I will see you and Phil by the big window at 12 noon.

Cheers Dek.  :med:

He doesn't need it now, apparently the 3/8" Coventry die heads will not go small enough for what he wants so the sharpening jig is only good for the 3/8" and 1/2" models.

Did you all enjoy it today? I took my 4yo daughter who loved it and 4month old son who also seemed to have fun watching everything and everyone!

Admittedly, I thought it was less busy this Saturday than last in terms of the people and there was also more space in the back hall than usual ...

I also didn't see the chap who was there last year displaying his chain driven clocks which I was gutted about!

I spent 6.50 on a sheet of fireproof wool - that'll teach me not to take my wife with me again

Didn't bump into any of you this year either although Stew, you walked past the middle eating section while I was sat down having lunch. I put my hand up to say hi but I don't think you saw me as it was chaos at the time, about 12:45!

Hope you all had a good day.

I was a bit disappointed.  :(

Several of the tooling suppliers were absent. Several of the engines couldn't run due to a ban on propane.

Chester's stand was in a different location to normal. So, probably, making the meet up a quiet affair.

I got to the Chester stand about 5 past but think everyone had gone! It was a bit sparse in there reeves and Bruce engineering had no engine castings on display just fittings. There weren't many suppliers of engine castings, stuart (who didnt have any prices or a pricelist without buying a £5 catalogue!), blackgates who are loco / fitting orientated, engineers emporium abd as i said bruce / polly + reeves didnt take any. the lack of tool suppliers is a result of doing better trade over the Internet as John S said. Didn't realise until you said David that i didn't hear any gas engines except for the two on the stand next to us - maybe they used butane. I got bored and left about two, but then regretted not looking at stuff in more detail! Not going back today though.

During the past 5 shows, the Chester stand has been further back. And, we used to block the gangway......  :palm:
So, we moved a few yards, into the window area for last year, and it worked well!

I guess, next year's directions will be, in the window area, across from the entry doors.

Sorry you couldn't join us Nick.....  :(

I got there 20 mins too late for the rendezvous, if indeed it took place. Didn't spot anyone I knew. Maybe we should devise a lapel badge like the exhibitors wear; a 2" disc in dayglo yellow with a big "M" on it, or something.

Like David D, I was slightly disappointed, and for the same reasons. There did seem to be fewer visitors, but maybe that was because the absence of several trade exhibitors made for more space.

David D, Philf, Stew, and myself walked back and forth between the Chester UK stand and the big window for the best part of an hour, with a 10 min pause at each end, but no one came to say hello.
Never mind there is always next year.   I went with 5 other blokes from "men in sheds" and we all enjoyed the show.

The general theme seemed to be a lack of traders, I rang Chronos on Thursday to see if they were going to be there after I'd heard a rumour...

Didnt see Dianne Carney either or the modeling press stand she was supposed to be presiding over...
Guess there's next year if there is a show :coffee:

Went this year but was disappointed that Chronos & ArcEuro weren't there, was specifically looking to see their stands as was intending to buy some 'stuff'' didn't know you guys were arranging to meet up wold have joined you, but as usual if you don't know what a person looks like 'ow you goin' to recognise anyone... I agree wi' some of the suggestions...wear some sort of label / badge so we can identify ea. other.

I knew Arc weren't attending; Ketan had explained on the ME Forum that his on-line business is sp busy that taking time out puts him behind too much. I dare say the costs involved (transport, accommodation, and stall hire) aren't insignificant, either). This week, on my recommendation, a chap on anothe forum ordered an ER25 chuck (£40, as opposed to $200/£150 from Little Machine Shop) from Arc on Tuesday and received it on Thursday in New Jersey, so Ketan obviously does all he can to keep up with incoming orders.
.
I even missed Proops Bros. I usually ended up buying something from their miscellaneous junk, even if it was only a few file handles or similar.

Maybe we will see more of the bigger suppliers to the hobbyist dropping out as time goes by. There was a new ME/model show here in Manchester in 2012, and again this year, but I understand it won't be happening again. Thge only big playerthey attracted was RDG /"Myford"
