Robbo...
« on: October 09, 2011, 06:19:49 AM »
Looking among the inmates on my orphan shelf, this one said "hello"!

An all brass, Robinson type hot air engine. Non runner, as usual. Should be no real problem.....

Does anyone recognise the design? Is it made from any available drawings?

Just over 6" tall + plinth. 3" dia. flywheel.

Thought never to have run....... But been very well/ regularly polished before it arrived here.  ::)

Anyone got a clue/ idea to it's parentage? Pleese!

Hmmm......

Over 100 hits, and not one comment. Guess it must be unique!

Wonder what it's story is. If only it could talk......  ::)

Hi Dave

Interesting little engine, just had a look through my books, nowt seems to match.

Would guess at a home brew one-off.

What does the plate say ???           'DEE' ???

Take it off. Maybe a bit of paper underneath, ..... big black X treasure buried here. ...  :loco:

Cute though. Like the rolled bits on the firebox. If that's what it is ??

I have a few modest talents. Knowing what I'm doing isn't one of them.

Heyup Dave.
The plate says ROBBO. Either the maker, or 'cos it's a little Robinson.

Probably, never run...... The hot cap was clean/ not sooty, before I fired it.

Much too rapid heat transfer to top end. Needs a barrier of some sort.

The firebox looks rolled, though I doubt it. The nameplate is pressed. Letters raised.

It didn't by any chance smell of cordite when fired, did it? - it just puts me in mind of a small shell cartridge case?

Stew.
I don't intend this to be a resurrection posting. I've precious little time to spend building Gold Blend, as it is!  ::)

I might have a rummage round, in a day or two, and take a few orphanage pics. There are still a few left in there....

Dave.
I don't think this piece of 3.5" bore brass ever went bang..... I would expect a case to have a tapered bore, and the little flange is neatly soldered on.

In fact, all the silver soldering and workmanship is first class..... But (I think) the design is wrong, in the detail.......

The short displacer cylinder is much too thick wall brass, and a regenerator displacer wastes too much space in a little engine like this.

My thoughts....... Unless anyone knows different?  :smart:

Hmmm..... Some seven months gone now.

But! I love it, when a plan slowly starts to come together.  :smart:

I was browsing YouTube the other day, when a thumbnail pic caught my eye..........

It's another Robbo!  :bugeye:  With the date of Model Engineer's plans.  :D

So, a quick look through Ebay. And, this arrived today........

Another step, in the right direction........
