Hi bob on the top covers do the underside of them get machined or are they just left flat? I was just wondering if there was any benefit to doming the cover permiting more steam into it for more expansion or would it just waste presure?

hi tom you will see beter on the next lot of pics when i post.  the cuvers have a 2mm by 30mm step on the inside of both cuvers so they sit snug in the cilender bore the dome in the top cuver is wher the top cuver had a bit stiking out so you can put it in the lathe to mashen up once all the mashening is dun you cut most of the stub off then grip the cuver on the step and dress the top of in the case of the bottom cuver the stub forms part of the gland for the piston rod

Yes i know about the lip that sets into the cylinder I was just wondering because mine is a compound if there is any advantage in giving the lipped side a recessed area. My thoughts are it would increase the presure due to the expanding steam, it would use a little more steam but could feed the second cylinder better.any thoughts?
I have started cutting the cast iron 5" dia seems to take a while one more to go and I belive I have  a piece 1 " x12 x12 that may work for the steam chests.

You need some clearance volume to prevent a hydraulic lock with a cold engine
It may as well be domed (better gas flow)
Just my view

hi all well john did the rest of the castings as per they turned out brill the rest of the gang was their to lend a hand also rob and mick and it was my turn to get the stick with man boobs so my first job was to fill in the background on the valve chest covers to highlight the letter R this was dun by mixing two part epoxy resin with red pant then put to one side to go hard i then machined up the two covers i got beater pics this time then the next job is the valve chest right pics

It's coming along nicely I've never heard or thought about using paint/epoxy mix.
