I wouldn't have a lot of sympathy for imported fire ants. They're a scourge down south, invasive, destructive. If you've ever seen them attack kids as a swarm, or animals, or had refrigerators and electrical appliances destroyed by them, you'd probably find them more dispensible.
I don't think of castings like those as art, craft maybe, but really not a product of artistic effort and decision. This type of ant nest casting used to be done with lead and I remember reading about it as a kid -- probably in a Reader's digest. Dates back to at least 50 years ago.
