Another sump.... but this time....
« on: September 14, 2013, 12:58:52 PM »
....CNC'd :)

This is why I've been so quiet recently, hopefully I can get cracking with some more projects now...

There's a bit of an "oops" on the underside - a noticable "band" across the middle. This happened because the CNC machine isn't big enough to do the entire length of the sump in one go; so I have to machine one half, then turn the sump around & mill the other half. I'd got super-accurate measurements between the roughing cutter & the finishing cutter, so I could swap from one to the other & maintain the same height.... then at some point whilst roughing the second half, the cutter managed to push its way into the collet.... so it ended up not cutting full depth. Grr! Now my carefully laid datum was lost, and I obviously didn't quite get it back to where it should have been.

Also... there were some shortcomings with the jig plate which I will have to address... look out for that one in the gallery soon :)
Cheers!

Well done Ade.

You will likely always see a join double machining. Design a 'feature' such as a rib, or a bit of fancy work at the join so it isn't noticeable.

Isn't it amazing that the swarf always takes up more space than the original stock did

There's quite a lot of it there, which will lead me onto another question, tomorrow...

Would that be "How do I make a furnace to melt all this and pour into ingots?"  :headbang:

Oh alu swarf.. *points towards the metal casting section of the forum* ;)

I actually went to the scrappy and bought a 200L drum of ally swarf, cost me a 6 pack of beer and he was happy not to having to handle it. =)
Machinery: Optimum D320x920, Optimum BF20L, Aciera F3. -- I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. http://www.roughedge.se/blogg/

I'm not sure how much swarf I actually have - I need to find a light person to hold the bag (my bathroom-type scales just say "overload" if I stand on them + the bag of swarf   :palm: so it's at least 10kg). Unfortunately, the scrap price of 10kg of aluminium shavings is about £5. It'd cost me more than that just to get to/from the scrapper...

Looks like I'll have to build myself a furnace...

Cheers!
