Point of the story: is there no way you can create a temporary, albeit rather ad hoc, storage to avoid all the double shifting to let you sort things out?

Andrew, you hit my problem at its core -- that's exactly what I HAVE been doing!  :palm:

Great story btw. And smart that you only allowed them to take back some of the clutter.

But I've got another shot at using the great outdoors as temp storage while I work on shelves -- we just had a cold front that passed through overnight that stretched from Canada down across the the entire US, north to south, then across the Gulf of Mexico to landfall again deep into southern Mexico. Very impressive looking unbroken line of storm on the satellite map and radar -- looked like a continental windshield wiper.

Behind such a huge front is clear weather, that looks permanent!

Which way was it going (the front)? If it was heading East, then we in the UK should get a month of uninterrupted rain starting next week... (we usually get your east-bound leftovers...)
Cheers!

Andrew,

From 1966 until 1980 I worked for a large electronics engineering company in Ilford, Essex.  The company had many sites and the company big-wigs would occasionally come on visits.  (If the local manager was in favour, he'd get a tip-off - if not, they'd arrive unexpected.)

We were supposed to be very tidy, only one piece of paper on the desk at any time and all that.  One particular no-no was piles of paper on top of filing cabinets.  As I was a 'coal-face worker', my desk and filing cabinet were usually awash with papers.   :bang:   :bang:   :bang:

When we had warning of a VIP visit, I would stuff as much paper as I could into my filing cabinets and get a beefy colleague to help me shut the drawers.  Anything that was left over, I used to put in large brown envelopes, address them to myself and put them into the internal post just before the VIPs arrived.  By the time the envelopes had gone round the internal mail circuit and arrived back in my In-Tray, the VIPs had gone.  Never let me down!
Best regards,

Pete W.

Hi there, Andrew,

Pete : That would be Plessey, Vicarage Lane no doubt ?

Well, close but no.  It was Horns Road and then Uppark Drive, actually.  Right company logo though.
Best regards,

Pete W.

same old...same old....

This morning weather forecast predicted no rain, part cloudy. Yep. Looked sunny enough. Put washed clothes on the clothes line. Even used pegs. Then I went inside the garage to organize some stuff before dragging out all the stuff from the storage to relieve one big storage rack into better use into garage....it suddenly got windy, dark and rained like no tomorrow. Almost got to clothes and then heavens really opened. Not only that, but also good dose of hail. Really nice pebbels. Had to check the car for damage...then clothes....crap.

Nature's Rinse Cycle, my dad always called it...

He just left his stuff out on the line until it hadn't rained for a couple of days... or if he needed something it got shoved in the tumble drier...

He he ..... when I owned my Launderettes I used to pray for days like that. In they'd come clutching armfuls of wet washing wanting to use the driers.  :ddb:

Passed them on to the next generation now so my son gets the twinkle in his eye when the rains come !

Pekka,

Clearly you have angered the Gods by attempting to clear up your workspace.

I would take it as a sign, and just leave the stuff where it is.

Oh it headed east all right. We get them second hand from Don.

Mill is back in one piece and leveled.

I cut a 5" x 18" rectangular hole in the ceiling between two joists, shoved a 4-1/2 foot 4 by 4 through the slot so it spanned four of them and hung the come along from that over the spot where I wanted to reassemble the mill. Then just ratcheted the pieces up one by one.

Now I can really see all the cracks and flakes in the rotten paint job that mill had, now that it's a centerpiece of the shop in good light. Humidity got to the undercoat and cracked half the paint off. Ugh. Chipped many more flakes off as I was moving it. The paint was a dark blue grey, but it was over some kind of slathered bondo, the color of red lead. Or have I got that backwards? Looked horrendous. Like a flayed whale.

Too ugly to let stand. So I tried sanding the thing, had a drop cloth over the slides, but didn't yield a proper job at all. Big cracks and flakes obvious. I Just had to get some grey paint over it.

It really ought to be taken down stripped or blasted. But not this year. I've got to get moving on about ten different fronts before winter gets here, including 7 cords of wood to cut and split. And of course finishing up the shed project.

Well at least humidity will not get to the mill any more. And it's great to see it in the shop opposite the lathe. Luxury!

Mill being slid into the workshop via come-along after having been deposited on ramp by tractor. The ramp is the door of the shed!

Last photo for this evening. I got the black rolling cabinet moved into the workshop (background) and started transferring contents. Also got a coat of paint on the mill vise. The workshop still needs a lot of work, and the storage shed is a shambles from moving stuff in and out and back in again. But next few days should see some shelves built and things starting to get organized.

 Great - glad to see it all coming back together, I know that depressing feeling when the workshop is unusable.

Brings back memories seeing your mill / drill. That style was my second machine tool purchase way back when, branded Warco but they all came from Taiwan back then. 'Workshop' was an 8x6 wooden shed at the bottom of the garden. Had an ancient Colchester Student, the Warco, and no floor space! By heck that machine took some lifting onto its base - took three of us and a lot of help from Archimedes

As the famous Jem Casey once opined:

Though your mill drill be planted and ye haven't a plan
Like a rock froze deep in the month of Jan,
And ye haven't three friends to lend ye a hand,
Forget not the ratchet.
The come-along clicking, yer only man.
