another vise stop.

Hi.
I don't know how many of you watch the videos from Tom at Oxtools but in this one he shows his multi axis vise stop.

Now I thought thats a good idea, how can I make one.

He chewed the body from a bar of aluminium with a vertical bandsaw but I haven't got a bar of alli or a vertical bandsaw so I'll have to think again.

Also mine doesn't need to be as big cos I've only got a minimill.

Eventually I came up with this.

A chunk of steel bar 25mm x 6mm x 70mm was cleaned up and the ends squared off.
a length of steel rod was chucked in the lathe and turned down to 16mm dia for twice the width of the bar and an allowance for parting off then two pieces were parted off 25mm long.

I then drilled a 10mm hole through both lengths.

Both pieces, now tubes were put in mill vise and a slot was milled along the length 3/4 of the wall thickness and wide enough for the bar to fit.

these tubes were then silver soldered to the ends of the bar.
the bar was the put in the mill vise and half of the tube was milled away.

I ended up with this,

then a 5mm slot was milled in the centre of the remaining tube for a clamping bolt, this was extended round the curve to allow rotational movement.

A few hours work with some brass , steel and aluminium gave me this lot,

And here it is assembled and fitted to the mill table,

I have to apologise for not taking more pics but I wasn't entirely convinced it would work but it did and I'm quite pleased with it so thanks  for the idea Tom if you ever look on here.

cheers for looking
Roy.

Roy,

you had fun doing that!

It's always interesting to see other peoples solutions to problems.

There was a posting some where at least a few years ago with a better video of the same idea.
You can buy them ready done as at 2007

I really like your solution to the heavy milling that Tom's version would need!  I've been thinking about one of these, but now I'll go about it in a manner similar to yours!
Thanks for posting,
Jack
