Just a brief intro.

I've been lurking for some time and have found the site really inspirational for a beginner like me. I'm retired and have an interest in restoring and refurbishing old guns and to help me in this I bought a (made in 1946 just like me) Myford M Type. It didn't have much by the way of accessories or tooling, and in gathering some together it's taken on life as a project in itself, one I'm having a lot of fun with.

I won't have much to offer the experienced guys, but the wealth of dozy beginner type questions lined up should give them a laugh!

If anyone is close to Newtown or Welshpool in Mid Wales perhaps we could swap notes over a pint.

Welcome to the forum, you'll find lots of help and support here.

There ARE no 'dozy beginner ' questions - except for the ones you don't ask  :thumbup: Just remember not one single member of the forum was born with an innate ability to use a lathe, we all had to start with zero knowledge (and some would say I'm not far off the starting blocks!)

Has your career given you any experience that helps in engineering?

Andrew,

I was an industrial chemist, so I know a good bit of metallurgy; pretty strong on metal finishing and printed circuit manufacture; and made electroplated diamond and CBN tooling for "the trade". Just about enough engineering knowledge to be a dangerous thing! 

My current project is fitting out a 13' x 6' workshop I attached to our garage which will then hold all my kit for both wood butchery and tin bashing.  When that's done I'll be making a set of lathe tool holders, a tool grinding jig, and bodging a four jaw chuck that wasn't designed for it onto a backplate.

I look forward to reading about your projects -- shop, tool holders, grinding jig, and 4 jaw adaptation are smack dab in  the center of the interest zone. Along with everything else it's possible to make, modify, or force into place with a hammer!  :lol: :lol: :lol:
