How do i achieve this?
« on: November 14, 2013, 03:07:54 PM »
Hi hope some can help me out please.

Over the past few weeks i have been making some drip tips, but because of the limited amount of knowledge i have on a metal lathe they all appear to be similar in shape .
I was wanting to know how is it possible to achieve tapered and bevelled shapes by using a lathe.

The first picture show's a couple of drip tip that I have made.

second picture show's some of the shapes I would like to achieve.

There's several ways I know of. But the easiest would probably be to just file them on the lathe.

Make sure you read up on it so you do it safely though. Using a file without a handle or getting a sleeve snagged on the chuck could do a real number on you.

You either need to grind a form tool or have a cnc lathe

Andrew

ps you could just buy them here:

Thank you for the safety tip.

Hi there,

Please do tell - what's a 'drip tip'?
Best regards,

I >>>think<<<< it's something to do with those 'electronic' cigarette nicotine inhalers from a bit of googling.

Andrew

You mean they tried to kill me with real cigarettes and after 50 years that hasn't worked (yet) now they want to try and use electronic cigarettes to finish the job. Those dam cigarette companies just never quit trying to get our money and kill us off.

Yup. They are used for E-cigs. Not the kind you buy all pre-made... more for the advanced e-cig user. It allows you to "drip" you nicotine liquid into your e-cig without having to basically take it apart.

I made a bunch for my nephew when he tried to break out into to vaping (smoking e-cigs) business.

Just make sure you are using stainless steel.

As far as shapes? Try using a ball turning attachment on the lathe...

I wish I could make a decent set of pipe.
Yes the drip tips are for electronic cigarette but not just the normal ones.

You could file up a form tool from sheet metal and make a basic follower mechanism for the cross-slide. Use the compound slide to advance the tool.

Thank you for the reply Pete, I've just tried to goggle a  "follower mechanism" but I could find anything, would you be able to point me in the right direction please.

Use the term 'tracer attachment', you'll find what you want.

You could set up to do it free hand like a wood lathe.
I think tubal cain has a video of that.

Do you intend to produce many of these to close tolerances? Since they're mostly decorative you could just rough out the majority of the material with plunge cuts and a parting tool, then smooth the steps with a file and emery tape. If you need to keep close enough to a plan for some reason you could figure out how far to plunge each step.

Here's a shoddy representation.

Although the way i'd do them would just be to cut the bulk material free hand with the carriage and crosslide handwheel and file it smooth.

I know there's a great temptation to try do everything in clever and overly technical ways, but it's just not worth it for these one-off jobs. Keep it simple.

I only intend to make them as one offs.
The diagram and instructions look pretty easy for me to understand and follow so I'm going to have a bash in the morning.

Piper,
Those forms can be quite easily achieved on a lathe, you will however need a 'radius turner' to make things easy.
Have a look at 'Divided he ads' (Ralph) posts.
