Ive done a few projects myself and will share later;

Anything really but not to large and time consuming

things like belt grinders/ lathe live centre /

Small lathe projects and welding

Hi there Fletch, Only joined recently myself, you've definitely come to the right place here, it's the best engineering and project forum around in my opinion.

I'd love to see some photos of your live centres,I've just finished one myself which is based on the old Matosa design.

I plan to make a few more variants soon so would really like to see your ideas.

Ha Ha . . . .Matosa . . I still use one I bought YEARS ago . . 1980 I think - the chap who was was making them (forget his name) worked out of a long two storey shed somewhere in Sussex (I think) and I went and collected it from him. Fascinating fellow, but I think he is no longer with us.

I was using mine only yesterday

I agree with the 'somewhere in Sussex' but I can't comment on the 'long two storey shed' bit.

Wow, 'long two storey shed', now that's the stuff that dreams are made of!

I had a telephone conversation with the gent concerned a few years ago. I have two Matosa (aka 'MAchine TOol SAles') running centres, a 'Sunday' one I bought from new and another 'every day' one I bought more recently as part of an eBay job lot. The Sunday one still lives in its original cardboard box and I dare say the Matosa trading address is printed on the label.

Andrew and Pete W, Matosa were located in Cuckfield,West Sussex.

The construction method he used was his trade secret at the time and entailed the first 10mm or so of the nose being separate and soldered/leaded into the main rotary head.

I found this out by accident one day when I had a job get loose in the lathe and break the front section out of it's soldered location.

I think he made them like this to facilitate pressing against the inner race of the 2 roller bearings in order to prevent damaging the bearings during assembly.

The 60deg nose was then wheel or belt driven while the finish grinding was done....OZ.
