Sticks in the corners of the garage....
« on: March 27, 2009, 03:50:14 PM »
Evening gents.... And the odd lurking laydee!!

Right the main part of this goes  "you never know what people have/keep in their garages....."

It is a long running theme that the corners of garages just inside the doors is the place where all manner of bamboo and stick are stored (well it is in the garages I fit to anyway!!)

Well try these I had the pleasure of seeing today on a door fit....

All hand carved by the gent himself and made from various indigenous and exotic woods, antlers and Brazilian buffalo horns!!!

Buffalow horns are the very dark shiny ones (dolphin, crooks and thumbrest types etc)

I had a description of how to form the horns to make crooks and told that he teaches the carving and stick building to others and learned the craft at a local college!

Most impressed at the talent that has gone into these.

They sell for a fair few bob too!!!

Just thought some would appreciate the talent?

Ralph.

Those are fantastic. Pretty neat find.

Does he need brass bands or tips machined up?

Don't know about bands.... Tips he buys in.

But we may be striking a deal on 40+mm brass knobs!

Like the one I made as a test piece last night....

I'll see where it leads?  :D

But you never know where these things will lead

Is there anybody there?

Looks a bit like crystal ball gazing Ralph. Do you know something we don't?

That chappie sure is an artisan, and anything you can do to keep him at it the better. These skills need to be passed on.

That would be a no - so far all I have for my efforts are several bits of completely useless scratched brass & steel along with a few triangular holes in my hands.... but

No problem about the materials Stew.... It just takes me a few weeks to get some (current climate, maybe a month!!)

You should have said about the mini Stew.... 15 years smacking cars with a big hammer :hammer:! Owned 2 minis as well  :)  (Found my timing light in a garage clear up last week too!)

No need to do the posting thing... It's ok to wait till I next visit Crewe... Won't be too long..... I've been getting a little instructing from John on RT usage.... It's amazing what you can pick up from a demo and plenty of chat

I've got some other stuff still here that I forgot to bring today, nuts, bolts and the likes. So I'll sort that for next time too.

Mark,
No worries about the thread... I am ok with it.  It all relates to craftsmens work anyway  :)

That's a large bit of a ball there... Much harder to polish being steel too!  Nice to see you take a mean curvy picture too

It took me a little time to figure it all out.... The split ball to allow the "T" slot to be made (does this allow any later adjustment?)
Very interesting bit of machining

When you have some engraving works started it would be nice if you would post them... I (as possibly many of the members) haven't a clue about the difficulties of engraving and the starting bits of a beginner are just as, if not more interesting to see than a "pro's" like you can see on youtube or a purchased instructional vid'!
It's nice to see the way someone learns and what they can produce   I'll leave that one upto you  :)

I've got a project  :proj: I've been wanting to do for quite some while:- A pocket sundial, but to do it justice it needs some engraving work so I would be keen to see how its done.

Ralph

That little goody bag will get a bit bigger for your visit

Stew,

I have a load of scrap iron sitting in my garden waiting for you to pick up.

You will need motorised transport, as I don't think you can carry it all home in a bag.

Nope, sorry, if you are not here within the next ten minutes, it goes in my stash.

What a silly question, you know it can stay here as long as it needs to. Anything in the garden is the wife's problem, not mine.

Erm, I would think so.... Those round bars are in the 20ish Kg market!!! The others are probably quite close to double figures too!!

Please be careful when handling the bars Stew (told John already) They really are a lot heavier than you might think!

Hope you both get some use out of it all!?  :)

Ralph,

Stew came round and we had a battle, fighting for who got what.

It is all sorted now, Bandit came to my rescue and gave Stew a good dose of knee licking.

I can assure you Ralph, every bit will be treasured and used to its full potential.

Thanks again

Also very happy you have not damaged yourselves lifting or fighting over who has what   I'm sure Bandit had the situation under control

Good stuff if some of it helps the loco.... Haven't read much on that recently?
