Title: Woodworking Awl (photos fixed)
Post by: adamriley on December 23, 2011, 06:27:35 PM
This is my first post , so please be gentle!

I don't have any Wip photos, but here are a few shots of an awl I made on my Barker lathe.
The materials are Stainless Steel (not sure what grade, but it's non magnetic), Cocobolo and silver steel (which I hardened and tempered in my kiln).

I am a cabinetmaker by trade, but am starting to make woodworking tools...

Besides a 4 morse mandrel this is the first real project I've completed on my lathe.
I need to get some tooling and make a radius turner for the lathe I think.

Thanks for looking.

Adam.

Hi Adam!

That is a NICE looking awl. I have found that some hand made wood tools can works of art in themselves... I saw a hand planer once that was amazing. This one fits in that category.

Just one complaint, when I clicked on the picture to see a larger one, I got an error saying your album was private. Any chance on making a public one so we can see bigger pictures?

Again... very nice.

Eric

Wow, thanks for the generous replies.
I've made the album public. Never realised you could even choose, to be honest!

Thanks.
Adam.

Very nice Awls there  very classy.

As I was looking at the pics it struck me that the top half looks like a wine bottle stopper

Wow that's lovely. There's something about the combination of finely finished metal and wood. Well done.

Thanks for the positive comment fellas.
Hopefully this will become a production item once I iron out a few issues.

Hi Adam.

Very nice looking awl there   (what's the difference between an awl and a bradawl... Tip shape apparently!?)

I was slightly led astray looking for the pictures of the whip....   (assuming spelling mistake)  And then realising "Work In Progress"... Up here for thinking  :smart:

I'm a great lover of the contrast in differing materials... Don't use wood too often though. But it does look very nice.

I Like the shape a lot too, sometimes a ball is too harsh,I see a hand tool with a drawn out shape to fit better in the hand. Just what I see  :borg:

Looking forward to what else you come up with. If this is the start we should be in for a good show over the next year or so
