Title: Car boot sale bargain finds
Post by: micktoon on May 06, 2013, 05:53:35 PM
Evening all, Well after a bank holiday of serious car booting, 3 sales visited in all, with John Doubleboost, we both come back smiling  :)  The sun was shining as we set off with our usual arrangement (he goes one way around and I go the other) , to save any ugly incidents where we both spot the same item at the same time lol.
This is my collection at the end of the day, all in all £32.50p spent ..............not bad at all , even a Yorkshireman or Scotsman would be proud

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carboothaul001.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carboothaul001.jpg.html)

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carboothaul003.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carboothaul003.jpg.html)

Its not that clear to see some of the stuff , but amongst it are 25 reamers , some tapered , an 18V Dewalt drill , a Makita 18V battery , an old heavy duty soldering iron , ideal for doing leaded glass work, a remote car alarm , a 5 lever mortice lock with 3 keys, a pull saw for wood , scraper for wood , hole saw arbor, feeler gauges , calipers , 3 files , couple a ratchet wrenches,  a leather hole punch , milling cutter , couple of taps , a few drill bits, two pairs of safety goggles , 10 heavy duty rawl bolts, a tube of evostick glue , a tube of pvc weld glue ..... not bad haul
We both had a good laugh too , especially when I bought the reamers John had offered the bloke £15 for and the guy said no , he must have then regretted it , I then saw them , and said how much for them all he said £15 ........... I said I will give you £10 ..he must have been thinking he didnt want to regret missing a sale again so said £12 and I took them ..... much to John's dismay when I told him lol ..............there are several doubles so he will still be getting some of them anyway.
We drove back with the sound of all our bounty rattling away in the back of the car with smiles like Cheshire cats on out faces .......................Mission Acumplished  :D

P.S before everyone rushes out to boot sales next weekend .................. normally its one blunt drill or something you already have three of , this was a good day indeed !
 Cheers Mick.

Nice haul.

I filled a bag with hammers this week at the car boot sale. I've never had much luck at my local car boot sale in the past but this year i've been finding some pretty neat stuff. Nothing as exciting as all those reamers though.

A couple weeks back I got a big bench vise for a tenner. Last time I saw a vise like that was at the Hexham car boot sale where I'd offered £20 and got laughed at. They wanted something closer to £100.

It's a bit of a weird car boot sale up that way.

Here's an idea!

If you have a mill, you can use the dewalt drill motor to make a power feed. I threw two dewalts in the bin in disgust once after both their chargers failed and the replacement ones were very expensive. I wish I kept them as I think they would be a lot better motor than the cheap drill one I am using for my power feed project :(

I am hoping 3.5 amps from an 18.5 volt laptop power supply will be enough power for it.

re relay setting tools - coincidentally, theres a gentleman heroically reinstating a CNC lathe who just mentioned he was going to try to  repair some no-speed contactors? (http://madmodder.net/index.php/topic,8261.msg93796.html#msg93796)

Ah but those are full of electronics - there will be two relays in each, but I expect to find them as sealed units when I venture inside.

I expect that the speed sensing is simply a pulse generator derived from the motor speed proximity switch charging up a capacitor with a schmidt trigger looking at the capacitor voltage and switching the relay when at set point.  (there are various external links to set the set point)

I do however well remember tweaking PO style 1000 and 3000 relay contact sets with relay setting tools thus revealing that I too am an old git!

Lyn.

I've got a similar pair in my toolbox only mine are straight.  We called them 'duck-bill pliers' and used them to straighten any kinks from the leads of resistors and capacitors (in the days when resistors and capacitors were big enough to see with the naked eye!)   :D   :D   :D   :D

Out of interest, I keep my eye on the tool-suppliers' catalogues but it seems 'they don't make them like that anymore'.

Someone told me that the evening before the General Post Office was split to form Royal Mail and British Telecommunications that BT still hadn't worked out how they were going to stamp their letters and Royal Mail hadn't worked out how they were going to pay their phone bill.  Probably apocryphal, or maybe just politicians leaving the guys at the coal-face to sort out the nitty-gtitty.

Hi Rob , not a bad little haul , espicially the silver solder, a real bargain............you have hit lucky getting milling cutters/ reamer  .......me and Doubleboost have not seen one between us all car boot season ( and its not through want of looking I can tell you lol ) I was going to get an ice cream last time but was trying to carry a 110v transformer , a grinder and a drill plus some other smal hand tools so gave it a miss  :D

Really wish I could afford a car. All the boot sales within range of Sunday morning busses aren't the sort i'd ever expect to find reamers or even drill bits at.
Title: Re: Car boot sale bargain finds

I'd be amazed to find anything like an end mill at a garage/tag/lawn sale here. Or silver solder.

However if you like jigsaw puzzles, aquariums missing one pane of glass, Lawrence Welk LP's, plastic tricycles, ashtrays, or assorted VHS exercise tapes, this is a paradise for that sort of thing.

Nice haul, Rob!

(especially the silver solder....)

Well i've just had a great weekend. Was taking apart a neighbour's washing machine when the neighbour opposite noticed and came over and helped me get the drum bearings out without destroying them. Turned out he had a drawer full of bearings and offered me any I thought I could make use of.

Anyways feeling enthusiastic I headed to the Swalwell car boot sale to try my luck. Just at the very end a fella was selling a frame level for £60, which was a good price I figure but more than I could afford. I had a bit time to wait for the bus so I head back to ask if he'd take anything less, or if I could have his phone number in case I decide I want it. But then the guy offered the smaller level he'd been hiding for £20 and I snapped it up.

There's a good Geordie saying, "Shy bairns get nowt". It never hurts to ask.

Some great finds there lads!

I went to three bootsales this morning and came back with load of stuff!

I bought a Dremel multi (7.2v) for a fiver, and eezibleed system for 50p to do the bleeding when I overhaul the brakes on my Midget..

I bought some fishing lures and line for my son, a couple of nice cheap (well, i'm a Yorkshireman!!) watches od Swiss make, I bought antique furniture and pictures for the wifes antique stall!!

Oh and a guitar for a tenner! (like brand new too!!)..

a few years ago I bought a huge bundle of silver solder, I put it in my garage and thought no more of it until I needed to get some out to give a friend some, my garage had been turned over a while before I needed to get it out, it looks as though they nicked it as I never did find it  :palm:

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Bosch battery drill with two batteries, a quick charger and it was cased, it cost £5, I thought the batteries were dead, it turned out they both just needed charging!, the week after I bought a spare battery for a pound, that was in good order too!!

Some more of my 'booty' finds!!

Been back to the car boots today with John DB, this is my finds for today.

Quite a varied selection, quite a few bits and bobs of tig welding collets ceramics etc , a flexi neck 26 tig torch head, a nice big old wood clamp, some leather working pliers come hammer plier tool , a pair of end snippers, an O ring plier ? , some french chalk sticks , a carbide burr , a small rose bearing , a large tap wrench , a die wrench , a nice tack hammer and last but not least a full size resin cast of a skull !.................. beleive it or not just what I was after as I want to carve a bigger skull so perfect to work from.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carboot006.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carboot006.jpg.html)

This is them half open the three prongs all move outwards and open to about an inch or a bit more. They will work for O rings but I think I have seen this type of thing getting used to put coloured plastic ID rings on birds legs ?  so that might be what they actually are ?.

Mick, They are actually Hellerman sleeving pliers for fitting rubber sleeves to cables e.g over a soldered joint in a connector.

Hi Phil , I would say you get top marks there as they are marked Hellerman down the side, so they would do what heat shrink sort of does eh  , I think they will have a few useful uses, I have struggled with getting sleeves , O rings etc on things before and I think these would have done the job..................... no doubt I will never come across another job like it now I have these

Hi Mick, I used to use pliers like that almost every day in the late seventies working as an electronic engineer. They were used with some weird smelling oil that was applied to the sleeve before sliding it over the soldered joint. I think we called it Hellerman oil.

Been back to a boot sale today and got a few bits and bobs. Nothing much engineering wise about but some useful stuff here.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/Bootsale014.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/Bootsale014.jpg.html)

The round thing at the back is a new Wadkin grinder cup wheel from a knife grinder used for grinding HSS planer blades, 4 nice large spring clips ( handy for holding things when they are glued etc ), an unused Stanley number 80 scraper plane I have been after one for a while. A good quality fine small oilstone set into a wood box, two large combination spanners 32mm & 36mm , a flexible car body file, a small pair or M&W calipers and a number drill stand from 1-60. I think the whole lot came to £22 but the Stanley plane was £9 of that so a good days booting

Well the sun was out so myself and JohnDB hit a couple of bootsales once again. We both got some decent stuff, here is my haul, although I got some good gear I was still gutted to see a bloke pick up about 12 tee handled allen wrenches like the one I did get ( I have been looking for some for a while) from right under my nose a matter of seconds ahead of me and get them for £2.............. still I cant complain, I got some good stuff today.

The haul consists of a nice big adjustable spanner ( 24 inch ) it was spotted by John but he alredy has one so I picked this one up ( made in China , which I dont like in general but seems good enough quality ).  Hi lads this was my lot from today............ Only the 6 bits of tool steel and the large centre drill engineering wise. The plastic dial caliper is a decent thing but more for woodworking or rough sizing. The pliers are proper old things I have got them more as small tongs for picking hot things up blacksmithing wise really at 20p you can not walk past them ! The two pipe cutters are Momument make and work well. The knife looking tool is for hacking putty from windows and as I have a window glass to replace should come in handy, the screw driver is Spiralux ratchet type straight blade and all the little buffing wheel type things are various grades , tuffted , felt etc, the small box came with them its called 'Gloss Sticks' for restoring the gloss to porcelain after grinding , made by the Columbus dental Mfc  Co, Columbus , Ohio U.S.A  there is a small instruction booklet and two sticks of polish inside and judging by the way its written must be early 1900's I would say , interesting.

Hi Mick

The hacking knife brings back memories of slicing the PVC outer sheath off Armoured cable ...

Strewth, that stuff was damned hard at anything less that 10oC.   :)

Usually felt better after weighing in the off-cut ends ...

Great haul, Bob.

Round here, most traditional engineering (in Trafford Park) died out too long ago for stuff to still be coming up at boot sales. I live in hope, but it's depressing looking round boxes of old VHS tapes, cassette recorders and suchlike...

Another nice find for you. With all these tools you keep finding you will soon have to have sale to make more room for more deals that you find.  :D

What looks to be a bunch of junky old tools sure comes to life under your skill full hands. Well done.

Andy,

You told me you lived in Sale!

I too am peed off seeing all the goodies our MadModder colleagues pick up every week. As you say, round here it's mostly crap on offer. We have one once a month at our local train station (we actually have two stations in our small town!) and I always wander down hoping to find a set of Myford Collets or a well kitted out watchmaker's lathe for £5 but when I wake from my dream all there is is boxes of mobile phone chargers, 33.6K modems, obsolete telephones, scart leads, kids toys etc. etc.

In the last year I'd be surprised if I'd spent as much as £5. (£4 on two Record Stilsons.)

There's one this Sunday and I'll be there - no doubt wasting another 30 minutes of my life!

Phil.

Yes, Sale it is, Phil, but I reckon the likeliest source is ex-Trafford Park stuff. Sale isn'r known for industry.

25 years back, I did score a nice free heap of light section brass and stainless from a guy who had retired from Budenberg Gauge in Altrincham, but their site is now a huge apartment block.

This is what the boot sale revealed on Wednesday lads, not a bad day at all , this good weather is doing the job!

A smallish pair of proper 'Mole grips' locking pliers, 2 six inch Irwin quick clamps, a 240volt Dewalt 3 inch belt sander, I have been after a 3 inch sander for a while so well pleased with this find, and last but not least a full 5 volume set of Caxton books , ' The Modern Motor Engineer' 1955 I think, in pretty much mint condition too.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/carbootaug1003.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/carbootaug1003.jpg.html)

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/carbootaug1005.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/carbootaug1005.jpg.html)

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/carbootaug1006.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/carbootaug1006.jpg.html)

As you can see on the sample pages the books have some real good old stuff in them, Volume 5 is a data and wiring diagram book , it just shows how few models of cars there were around then and how basic they were.............. this was back in the good old days where the owner of a car could actually fix their vehicle themselves without having a factory computer and special tools to do even the most basic tasks like now !

 Cheers Mick.

Hi there, Bob and all,

I don't get to car boot sales so I rather envy you.  Mind you, having been a 'tool junkie' for several decades, I probably haven't room for many more.  In fact, I've reached the stage where I just know I've got a tool that's right for the current job, but where the heck did I put it?   :bang:   :bang:   :bang:

Regarding the Machinery's Handbook, what edition are they up to now?  The one Bob shows is 14th Edition - what year does that date from?  I was given the then current edition about 20 years ago but I already had and retain a much older edition.  If you're engaged in modern production I guess the more recent the better - however, if you ever dabble mending/adapting old equipment, it's handy to have an old enough Machinery's because they have lots of info on superseded screw threads and stuff that the Machinery's editors have decided they don't need to include in the modern versions.  Just my two penn'orth.

More boot finds to report lads. Sunday I got this stuff , A Black & Decker heat gun, a slaters ripper ( you slide it under slates to be removed and pull back sharply , the hooked blade cuts the copper roofing nails off so slates can be removed without breaking them ) 2 scotch augers for boring holes in wood , a bar fits through the top like a tommy bar and they pull themselves into the wood as they cut a wood bit was thrown in with them, and a nice 6 inch imperial dial caliper.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2002.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2002.jpg.html)

I have been back to another bootsale today as it was lovely day weather wise again, I took a couple of photos of the general scene, thinking people from other areas of the world may not be able to picture an English car boot sale !

This is the parking area in the foreground and the bootsale are in the distance, as you can see its a lovely day and setting, just goes to show the North of England is not as deserted and desolate as some Southern M.P's seem to think .

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2007.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2007.jpg.html)

This is the general scene in there , lines of cars with their good either on the ground or on tables, it can be literally anything for sale.......you name it , its there really, people just walking about inspecting the goods.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2004.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2004.jpg.html)

This is what I managed to find , a nice set of metal drawers, I knew John Doubleboost was after some of these so snapped them up for him, The yellow things resting on top of the draws are suction cups for fitting and lifting glass...............good quality German made so at £2 each , you never know when you might need them.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2008.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2008.jpg.html)

A set of Dormer M24 taps, the box looks like its been rattling about in a toolbox but the taps look unused.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2009.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2009.jpg.html)

For once some proper engineering type stuff, a 5C collet block set and a new in the box 3/4 inch R8 collet.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2010.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2010.jpg.html)

Last but not least a box full of reamers and two lathe chuck keys, the reamers are both metric and imperial, hand and machine reamers, some nice and sharp some a bit rough but the whole lot was £10

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2011.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug2011.jpg.html)

Great finds Mick!  A slate nail cutter would fit in here well, the land of slate roofs! That caliper looks identical to mine -- first measuring tool I bought when I built the Gingery lathe eleven years ago. Does it say something like OEM on the label? I really envy the 5C collet block set -- used a set like that in the last place I worked at. That must have been a satisfying day!

Sundays car boot haul , the weather has started to turn so showers made the boot sales a bit on and off but still managed to find some decent stuff. Here is the days haul.
Two Scotch augers the long wood drill bits you can see at the bottom of the photo, they have short tee tubes at the top out of the camera veiw that a bar slots through and they are just wound into the wood by hand, this is a 3/4 inch and inch sizes , I have already picked up a few smaller sizes so have a set up to inch now. The box with the electric sockets coming out of it is a 110 volt splitter box so you can leave 3 items plugged in at a time, which will be handy. Three spanners 13mm, 14mm, 17mm that fit my routers for changing bits.  A Clarkson 7/16 BSF tap, a long MT3 tapered reamer, a roatry wire brush, a cup wheel for a grinder, 4 Dewalt recipricating saw blades, a clamp fixture thing, that drops into a hole and will push against an object ( just looked handy for 50p ) and last but not least , the thing that looks like a punch with a knurled section on it is a 1.25 carat diamond grinding wheel dresser made by Albert Herbert so a nice bit of quality kit.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/Deniswren029.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/Deniswren029.jpg.html)

This second photo is a small fixture that a 4 inch grinder fits into and makes it into a small chop saw, they are handy when the grinder has a thin cutting blade for cutting hardened  rod etc and shortening bolts and things.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/Deniswren031.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/Deniswren031.jpg.html)

Not much for me this week
A nice blower (from a bouncy castle)
A 15 inch Bacho adjustable
And best of all a Cybermans face mask

Now that's a tough post to follow!

I was going to say here's my caliper. It outlasted two digital ones. Every time they punked out I'd reach for the old mechanical and get on with measuring whatever it was I was er, uh looking at.
Hi VTsteam I forgot to take a photo of the caliper for you so took one today, its SMIEC , sorry about crappy photo The box says China National Machinery Imp & Exp Corp Shanghai Branch , they are really good quality and have a solid smooth feel to them.

Hi lads , more boot sale goodies today, I dont know if its just me but the photos on my last couple of posts look squashed vertically and stretched length wise ?
This is todays finds, a random selection really.
Two tubes of brown silicone, a waterproof light switch, I need these items for planned jobs and 4 bowling balls , these are made from a very hard heavy wood called Ligum vitea and are perfect for making mallets on the wood turning lathe.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3002.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3002.jpg.html)

This is the more engineering related stuff. A tool makers clamp, some nice calipers , Jennys are Starrett and have extending leg and fine adjustment too as well as lock, The large internal ones are Moore & Wright and the similar smaller ones are Brown and Sharp even through they are so alike, the small external calipers are also Brown and Sharp but look older and have pattent 5 97 marked on them 1897 ? A nice 15 inch of Elora ( German ) adjustable shifter and a adjustable wood cutting bit for the old type brace.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3001.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3001.jpg.html)

Then I spotted a box with books in it ..........Umm there seemed to be foundry type books mixed with religous stuff I managed to get these ones and avoid the religous ones.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3003.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3003.jpg.html)

I only really wanted the general foundrywork books so will give John and Rob the others as they like the more detailed books on the subject. I will keep these three.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3006.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3006.jpg.html)

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3008.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3008.jpg.html)

There are two of the Standard methods of analysis so will see if Rob wants the other one, I think he will also like The properties of cast iron and the Chemistry book has quite a bit on metals too as well as things relevant to his plating I think.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3004.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3004.jpg.html)

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3007.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3007.jpg.html)

I think John will like Practical ironmaking as lots of industrial action in it.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3005.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootAug3005.jpg.html)

Hi Skyrocket , looks like you enjoy the car boots too, I have been watching some of your videos
This is last Sundays boot haul.

A Record chain wrench , A strage shaped hammer, a Record spoke shave and a rough old scraper tool
(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug4001.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug4001.jpg.html)

This is the hammer head, not sure what it would have been for exactly but will clean up and a new handle should make it new again !
(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug4002.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug4002.jpg.html)

Some taps , 7/16th BSF Presto set and M16x2 Osborn, both good makes and as new.
(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug4004.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootaug4004.jpg.html)

A Mitutoyo 150 Digimatic vernier, it needed new battery so a gamble , but it worked fine with new battery.

These are todays finds.

A small Moore & Wright square , A wire and plate size gauge, one side has the standard wire gauge sizes and the other side is marked with the decimal equivalents
A triangle square with no makers name,  a set of Bonhaus imperial allen wrenches and an Oakley soft spounge sanding drum to go in the drill press, these are handy for sanding curved sufraces in wood.

That height gauge is a fantastic find. And the writing is indeed japanese. It's worth remembering this letter becuase it's pretty common and helps tell chinese and japanese apart: の (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%81%AE)

I've had bad luck getting to the car boot sale lately. It's been lovely weather for a long while, but every time I set an alarm and manage to get myself up early enough it's a damp morning.

You ruined that height gauge, by touching the bit that says 'Don't Touch Here'. Send it to me and I'll throw it in the skip at work :)

My local Car Boot sales rarely have anything to interest me but this little machine vice intrigued me, I've never seen one made of brass before. The jaws are lined with steel.
The micrometer is just for size.

Some good finds there Skyrocket  , the height guage was a good buy, I did like the bag of skulls too, I got a good life size skull a while back, that vice is unusual too Norman being brass, the sort of thing you have to bu when you see or you end up regretting it.
Good to see a few more people posting on this thread too.
I have a couple of photos to take off the camera of my Sunday booting finds, I will post later or tomorrow .

This is what Sundays car boot sale turned up.

A bit of a varied selection. 2 big size new files, one flat one half round. 4 x 40grit sander belts,  a ' king dick 1/2inch extension bar, a nice pair of wire cutter/ strippers, a bag of cable ties, a carbide tipped drill bit, a Dormer set of easi outs and matching drill set, a Zeus data book, a Wesco oil can, 4 Britool combination spanners 32mm, 19mm, 18mm, 17mm and a Gordon open ended spanner 8mm x 10mm.

This is some 1/2inch thick alloy plate and some 4 inch 100mm ball bearings, they are flaking but ok for what I want them for, to make formers for blacksmithing and metal bashing, they are not light for carrying about boot sales mind !

Tidied up- and possibly a new motor- you have a nice tool to drill and possibly mill a bit from the saddle of a Myford.

Not quite  a Potts spindle( there are three varieties) but very nice addition. I have the two Potts- gave the dividing one away. Worth trying to dig into Woking Precision Models if you are interested.

Lucky you

This is what I found at the  car boots this week.
Wednesday, There are two cans of some anti rust spray meant for spraying on moulds and dies according to what I can make out off the can, it seems good stuff leaves a thin wax coat. A nice small Snap On chisel, A chrome brush with a handle that you can fill with fluid, turns out it was for cleaning typewriters after looking up on the net. A pack of various hooks for hanging things up, A pack of 10 car body filler spreaders and a paint mixing stick with 2-1 and 5-1 ratios marked on it.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootsept1002.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootsept1002.jpg.html)

I also got these books, all from one stall for £10, the old steam engine one is from 1902, the decorative ironwork book is good with good photos of ironwork being made in stages.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootsept1003.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootsept1003.jpg.html)

Todays haul was this lot.
The sockets are Halfords 3/8th drive torx type heads, 3 old style soldering irons,  a blower that will be good for blowing off sand casting moulds, the two metal brackets are for hanging something up on, wire leads in my case. There are various sanding drums, grinding stones and a carbide burr, a record small G clamp, WD40 , light oil and an interesting hammer head.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootsept1004.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootsept1004.jpg.html)

This is the hammer head , I think it must be handmade as quite irregular and not perfect, I like the 'cut of its jib' so will clean it up and fit a new handle, You can never have too many hammers !
(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootsept1005.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202012/Madmodders%202013/carbootsept1005.jpg.html)

Mick, Terry Aspin's book is a casting classic. And looks like a pattern for that hammer was carved out of wood -- maybe with a knife. Just imagine it as a piece of wood and you can almost see it being whittled! Fun stuff...

Hi VT , Terry Aspin's book does look good  , I think the hammer has been forged rather than cast by the look of it but maybe it could have been wood pattern carved ? , I will clean it up tomorrow and see if I can tell.
Bob , you did well again today , that acid really cleans up the stuff well , the boring bars look new  ............... Keep up the good work lad

Mick, I was wondering about whether it was cast after I wrote that. It just so looks like it was carved.

I don't imagine cast iron makes a good hammer unless somehow malleable iron. Could it have been cast steel?

I don't suppose the carved appearance could come from chipping it out of steel?  Can the forge hammer actually make those gouge shapes?

Is that hammer head not hand forged - ie blacksmith made ?

I agree with awemawson, it looks hand forged, so possibly wrought iron?

Hi Lads , I have cleaned that hammer head up and its been blacksmith made I would say , I will take some photos of it tomorrow and post them, its crude in one way but well done at the same time. It also looks like it was never quite finished or used as both heads are unmarked from blows and unfinished....quite an intersting thing really

Good find on the indexed tools Skyrocket, I have been a bit slack at the boot sales latley but got a few bits I will take some photos of and post this week. For anyone interested I did take some photos of that hammer head , it looks to be blacksmith made , the cast looking surface is because it was deeply rusted but has been steeped in battery acid to remove the rust.

Hi Skyrocket, You got some interesting finds again  Yes when I get around to it I think I will have a go at finishing that hammer head.

This is todays car boot finds ..... The boot sales are dying off for this season I think now , even though its been a nice day it was more quiet in general. Two decent books £2 each , one wood carving and the other woodturning, A funny looking coping/fret saw but seems good quality, a small hacksaw, a marples tee handle hole drill, a round diamond sintered type file , meant for filing ceramic tiles I think but I want to see what its like on wood when I am carving and a nice hard smooth natural oilstone.

....a marples tee handle hole drill...

Is it a drill or a gimlet ?  Hard to tell as it is at the bottom edge of the picture.

Dave.

Hello Fellow Modders.
As we are an International group some folk may not know what a Car Boot Sale is.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_boot_sale
Has a good description and history.

Ref the hammer head, it looks like a ships / boiler makers riveting hammer.
The length of the head is to miss the ribs when riveting close.
Does any one have other ideas.

Not bad Bob , the mags were good find , that should keep you off the streets reading all of them !
Trev , I think the hammer might have started off as test piece for blacksmith apprentice or something and maybe not meant to be so long ? it looks like it was never finished so may have strayed from the drawing too much ?

That's just the sort of stop watch you like to mend! You guys have all the luck, worthwhile stuff in car boot sales. Every time I visit my son in the South of England, i insist on going to a Car Boot sale, sometimes I get luck and find a good hammer or two, but never anything like you find up in the North!

Well we don't have car boot sales here, but there is Craig's list and I have been finding some good deals lately.

This week I picked up a Craftsman 12" drill press for $100.  (Sears sold these for around $300 when he purchased it.) It was new in the box and never put together.  The guy got it as a gift and didn't want it.  The seller said it was missing one of the handles for the quill but didn't realize that one of the three handles was suppose to be different and was right there in the box.  I noticed he was wrong about the handle, but didn't point it out to him as that was why he listed it so cheap.

The drill press is loaded with features and has a Led work light, Laser tracking, a huge table, and the best part is a digital depth gauge!
I also LOVE the different handle for moving the quill up and down.  Craftsman stopped making this model a few years ago and the new model has way less features which is a bummer as I would like to pickup a second or third drill and set up gang tooling on them.

Here is a picture of the new toy next to my 9" drill press.

Hi All , Due to mainly weather  I have not been to many boot sales but got to an indoor market last week and got some new taper shank drills, a long series normal shank drill and a reamer , I got the lot for £10.
I can't remember the actual sizes off the top of my head but the long MT2 drill is 18 inches long, largest was 14.5mm I think , all good makes and unused so happy with them.

Gentlemen,

We don't have car boot sales here (USA), but call them yard sales, etc.  I was wondering why they are called car boot sales?  Because you drive to them and store what you buy in the trunk of your car?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I was wondering

Things have become more organised in recent times.

Originally. The sellers assembled their cars/ vans, in a field or car park area, and their wares are displayed on the ground, or a table, around the rear of the car.

Or indeed were in the boot of the car, hence the name

Nice find on the box of drills Skyrocket, I went to the bootsale for the first time in a while with John Doubleboost , John came back emptyhanded but I got a couple of things.
A Martindale Voltage tester, looks good quality and condition, it indicates what voltage range , if DC or AC and polarity for £2 and an angle drive gadget for a drill , seems like a good bit of kit , it swivels to all angles and is well made so for £3 it would have been rude not to have bought it

This is the angle gadget in a few positions.

Hi Mick
Two nice bits of kit you have there, a nice rugged tester with plenty of insulation, and that mysterious angle drive, which I have never seen before, could be very useful. Makes my poor old 90 degree drive look very basic.

                                                                        Good Finds   Cheers David

hello! a little video on my latest finds ,regards chris

Just employed this advise in a second hand shop. Bought a beat up toolbox for a fiver that'd been sitting in a dark corner for a year with stuff piled on it, along with with a nice big n sharp crosscut file. Had to use my phone to see what was inside and decided to buy it before sorting through. It has a few taps, split dies, die nuts, drills, and handles. No idea what thread type yet but they're pretty rusty and look as if they got flooded, but they still feel sharp and should hopefully clean up fine.

Hi Chris

I agree with you about buying toolboxes, you get much better value and there's generally something interesting at the bottom.

I like your Yankee pump action screwdriver.  I still use one regularly.  I find the batteries are normally charged when I come to use it - unlike my cordless drill.  You commented on the cost of bits - as I understand it they aren't made any more so some sizes are impossible to find - so I thought I'd show a picture of my home made solution.

I've used two hex bit holders to make bits that will hold hex screwdriver bits in the Yankees.  The small one is made from a broken pozi bit and the large one I made using a bought one for the dimensions.  The two big ones fit a big Yankee (from a £5 toolbox) and the ones on the right a small one (inherited).

Your sash cramp also reminded me that I found one and a half sash cramps like that in a skip.  The other bit was in there somewhere but I couldn't find it so I made a replacement.  The replacement part is the one at the bottom right in the picture.

You may not be able to resist a rusty box.  My weakness is interesting looking skips.

Russell

Well it looks like 'Boot season' has started at last , Myself and Doubleboost had a good afternoon car booting in the sun and it was back to the good old days of being busy and plenty to try and find.
This is my haul from Sunday.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202014/Harrisonapronsaddle018.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202014/Harrisonapronsaddle018.jpg.html)

Not a bad collection , 2 x Moore & Wright toolmakes 4 inch clamps , a 7 inch tool makers clamp and a 9 inch both probably apprentice pieces but well made. A 3-2 morse taper sleeve and a 3-1 morse taper sleeve, thread repair file, Maun pliers, a nut splitter, a scrolling iron, a leather workers creasing tool , a coping saw, two bowling balls that look like Ligum Vitea but could be brown composite ? I will find out when I try to make them into a mallet lol, two packs of ten sanding belts for my 3 inch Dewalt sander, a nice old tack hammer, and last but not least a Sandvik loggers hook, no real reason for buying the hook other than I would rather I had it than some homocidal maniac had it lol.
Lets hope the weather keeps up as it was the first week that was at all busy. Anyone else had any good finds ???

  Cheers Mick

Great idea about re-purposing the bowling balls, Mick,  -- never thought about them being Lignum Vitae. Do they sink in water?

My big shop purchase day of the year is coming up Saturday -- the Bernardston engine show. No boot sales here , but that one show is worth the wait all year. I doubt I could afford more than that anyway!

Hi Lads , more car boot goodness gathered in today.
I called in a a boot sale that does not have much in the way of tools etc and almost all the way around the place I was muttering to myself how it was a waste of space......................... then I spied a plastic box with some milling cutters in it a Miatoyo depth mic and Tesa dial calipers and did a deal £22 for the lot.
There is a small ER collet chuck, various reamers, milling cutters and engraving cutters 90% carbide and all sharp or new, when I counted up there was 80 in total !.
Later in the day I went to two more boot sales with John Doubleboost but only got a pair of Mole grips and a small long reach G clamp but £3 for the pair I was not robbed.

Did pretty good today. For a couple of years i've been trying to find reamers at the boot sale, and today I found a whole box of them for a fiver. Imperial sizes, a few of them seem pretty blunt. One is tapered with a square end ground into one end, removing the markings except for 'No.8 HS' so i've got no idea what sort of taper it is. Also found a couple of slot drills in the bottom of the box.

Also got a Starret No.246, which is apparently a planer/ shaper gauge. Didn't know what it was at the time and neither did the seller so I got it out of curiosity. Seems a little bit useless but who knows! I'd be happy to trade it for a micrometer or something if anyone has a use for it.

Boy that camera flash makes my keyboard look filthy.

Simon, you'll find that shaper setting gauge quite handy for measuring thing in awkward places - slide and lock it in the gap - remove and measure. a bit like a stubby 'Gunters Rule'  (two lath shaped pieces sliding together and locked at a particular length by a wing nut)

That taper gage is the best thing since sliced bread.

I use it on the mill allot for finding a height for tooling, i have used it to measure my gap whilst making a dovetail, I have an adapter that fit on the top and it becomes a height gage on the surface plate.

once you start to use it you will never run out of ideas where to use it.

Anthony.

Hi All , had another good day at the bootsale on Wednesday, Here is the collection.

Its a bit varied,  Two bags of stainless cap head bolts, Some wolfcarft auto hand clamps, pair of glaizers plyers, three leaterworkers awls, 4 Lufkin toolmakers clamps, a fine DMT diamond file, a C spanner, a Kreg pocket hole jig, 14mm dewalt long reach spade bit, a slim round rasp type tool that will be good for some carving jobs, a fret saw , a centre finder for round stock, a pair of large tin snips, a panel beating hammer, a small Stanley USA plastic tiped hammer,  and a nice Raborne Chesterman carpenters set square. I think it came to about £30-35 in total so good value.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202014/Mowerrepairs009.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202014/Mowerrepairs009.jpg.html)

All 4 Lufkin toolmakers clamps are the same size and good clean condition.

This is the Slim rasp type tool , it has a gimlet type end so you can bore a hole then rasp it bigger, I have not seen one before , it has no makers name on it but looks good quality.
(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202014/Mowerrepairs011.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202014/Mowerrepairs011.jpg.html)

This is the pocket hole jig instructions , I could have done with one of these a few times so should find jobs for it.

If the weather is ok tomorrow I will be looking for more .......its a BIG if by the look of the forecast though .

Wasn't much at today's boot sale except for a couple of water fire extinguishers, except the blokes wanted £30 each since 'that's what they cost new'.

Found an Atari STFM on the way out though. It's an old 80s computer, and one i've been hoping to find for a while.

The two interesting features are the YM2149 sound chip, which produces a nice sound if you're into that kind of thing.

And that it comes with a midi in and out as standard, for controlling external music stuff.

It needs a few repairs though. Haven't tried switching it on yet since it got a little bit wet during the boot sale, and the floppy disk drive seems to be missing a spring to help eject the disks. Hopefully the whole thing will work after giving it time to dry, just in case any water got inside.

Should be fun to mess around with for a bit though. There was alot of music software made for it, including the first versions of Cubase.

I dropped on lucky today as myford-stuff on eBay was at my local boot sale! I got all the above from the £1 each item bins! 2 massive pallet sized boxes crammed full of alsorts!

I grabbed one of these for half the price he has them on eBay for too :-)

Glad to see it looks like others are having some finds at the boot sales too. I found some more items today myself.

This was this mornings haul, A Mitutoyo Digimatic Vernier with data port, Weller soldering iron stand which I needed as have irons but no stands for them, a 30mm Presto tap, some worn Gilbrow tinsnips I will make into tongs, Snap On folding imperial allen wrench set, 3 flap discs, two scrapers , a slip stone, a small clamp and two strips of Moore & Wright 0.25 feeler strip.
(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202014/Mowerrepair2001.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202014/Mowerrepair2001.jpg.html)

I tried another two bootsales in the afternoon with John Doubleboost and got this stuff, the spanner roll was kindly given to me by John I had mentioned I was looking for a spanner set so I do not have to keep going from the shed to the garage for a spanner, he never used this set so gave them to me , I will no doubt have something for him in return at some point. The other things are nice Moore & Wright scraper, a few taps, two saw type cutting wheels for wood, a pad saw blade, a small buffing wheel, CK circlip pliers, a small locking clamp pliers, A tap wrench that the seller had made many years ago, I told him it was going to a good home, A tall frame junior hacksaw, a wire brush for the drill and the two plastic things are for 8mm and 10mm pipe to bend or straighten the pipe.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202014/Mowerrepair2003.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202014/Mowerrepair2003.jpg.html)

So the weather held out unlike yesterday.

 Cheers Mick.

Hi there, John,

That looks like a good haul!

Your photo of the cold chisel stirred my memory so I've just dug out a copy of the Moore & Wright catalogue 'of Precision and Hand Tools', 4th edition, January1963.  On page 124 it shows their range of 'Sure-Cut Chisels' and says this about them:

'These chisels are made from a new non-tempering Special Nickel Alloy Steel.  They can be re-sharpened with a file but are so tough that they will do the hardest work.  The flat section gives a firm grip, and they will not splinter under severe service.'  [Their emphasis, not mine.]

They were available in eight different sizes from 5/16" wide by 4" long (price 1s 9d each) to 1⅛" wide by 10" long (price 8s 0d each).  They also give the following:

'TO HARDEN - Heat to 830° C (bright cherry red) and quench in oil.  FORGE at the same heat.  It is very important that the above temperature be adhered to.  It neither forges nor hardens well at lower or higher temperatures.'

I still have one of the smaller ones, one of the first tools I ever bought and while I was living in the family home.  My father, an accomplished woodworker, would not accept that a chisel capable of cutting metal could be sharpened with a file.

It has the words "sharpen with a file" stamped on to it

Not a car boot find, rescued from the local "amenity site".

The guys there will sell for very little money anything you fancy taking away . The latest Elfin Safety Nazi has decreed that electrical goods are not to be let go, but the lads are good souls and use Nelson's telescope when required. The few quid they raise goes to the local childrens hospice.

A cast iron table saw from days gone by and a modern Spear and Jackson 10 inch brass backed tenon saw, not a Chinese effort, the genuine article. The blade is as straight as a gun barrel and the teeth are sharp and un dinged. It's hardly been used at all just left to go rusty; went through a chunk of hardwood with no bother when I got it home.

The table saw marked "Exon No 2, Made in England" is a good substantial tool. The bearings are smooth, underneath all the dirt the table is unmarked, and the fence is definitely sturdy ... about 3/8" cast iron.  I already have an excellent table saw, but after hacksawing eight pieces off a 2" x 1" bar of EN 36 the other day I surely need a steel saw! With a bit of bodging this might very well do the job. Maybe utilise the top section as the basis of a Potts type saw to sit on the lathe?

Tenner the pair.

Got myself some Barbour Wax and some reciprocating saw blades. I spotted a few on the table, various kinds, mostly full boxes. Asked the bloke how much for the lot and he said a fiver. Counted at home, 56 saw blades, all brand new (odd bit of surface rust from storage), all brand names like bosch, milwaukee etc. For less than 10p each I am very happy.

Hi there, Andrew,

Not much to tell, really.  I consulted Rage Customer Service asking specifically about the Evolution's ability to cut cast iron and they replied that it wasn't designed/intended/recommended for that material.  (I just looked to see if I still have their email but couldn't find it - so I can't be certain which of the three terms they used.)

I was disappointed because I had bought a chunk of cast iron from College Engineering Supplies, they advise choosing a nominal size allowing for achieving the desired dimensions if the material is -5 mm on nominal size but mine is more like +5 mm and next nominal size was well up anyway so there's a lot to come off!
I could stick it in the four-jaw and machine off the surplus but it'd take a long time and make an awful lot of unpleasant cast iron dust/swarf.   :bang:   :bang:   :bang:
I might have been able to do the job with a slitting saw in my little horizontal mill but that's not running yet.   :bang:   :bang:   :bang:

I have a 10" electric saw that I equipped with a TCT blade - I was cutting some plywood clamped to my welding bench, and thought that the going was a bit slow - I then found that the timber had shifted and I was cutting through the 18 mm solid steel top  :bang: No teeth were lost amazingly, and the erroneous cut was quite a good finish !

 Mr Mawson! Really! I remember many years ago helping my father cut some plywood on a workmate. We were using a massive old B&D industrial circular saw that would go through anything. Anything including the top of the workmate, off which I neatly sliced a corner. Luckily Father had checked underneat and told me I was "well clear" It was his best workmate. I was not!

Well this is todays car boot collection, Went to two sales with John Doubleboost, but he got best buy of the day

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202014/Listerbootday003.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202014/Listerbootday003.jpg.html)

A varied selection, a tool roll that goes with the bags further down the page, 4 center drills, some sanvik scrool saw blades, a 3MT center drill holder, small engineers square, a quite crude depth gauge but ok for wood work, a Starrett 823M internal micrometer 30mm - 300mm, a Swedish made angle finder, A indexable grooving tool for the lathe with a box of varied tips, an Allbrit planimeter, a oilstone mounted on a wooden handle, I think used to smooth off the back edge on bandsaw blades, A nice unusual old hammer, an Eclipse saw set for use when setting saw teeth and a spoke shave Record 51 these were both for a friend who I know was looking out for these. I think this whole lot in the photo came to £25 in total, god bless bootsales when you can find what you want !

The Starrett 823M

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202014/Listerbootday001.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202014/Listerbootday001.jpg.html)

The Allbrit planimeter, I know there looks to be a central sort od weight pivot part that is missing but easy to make and I suspect the chrome cylinder/tube with the knurled rim is not part of the planimeter, I have looked on the net and they all seem to be adjustable so the head can slide along the bar, this one looks fixed so can anyone shed any light on this? They are used for working out the area of shapes on charts etc, I did not know this when I bought it but it was only £3 so worth a gamble lol.

(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodders%202014/Listerbootday002.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodders%202014/Listerbootday002.jpg.html)

I had also wanted a tool bag mainly for putting my carving gear in when I go to the club, I saw a good army holdall type bag for £2 ( the one at the back ) then after I got that I saw a pair of Bucket Boss 24 inch tool bags for £10 so got them too , so from not having enough bags I now have one for every item lol.

That's a hell of a find! Which bootsale was it?

Myself I found carbide. The collection begins...

After looking it up the lower ones are for face mills. Doubt i'd need something like that for a while, so I could send them to anyone that might have a use for them.

A nice unusual old hammer

Looks like a raising hammer. Would be handy for shaping sheet metal.

Post by: micktoon on August 31, 2014, 06:43:01 PM
Hi Simon, John went to Blaydon , then we both went to Hexham followed by Tranwell, it was just one of them good days , we will have passed plenty of other stuff too, yet the past few weeks have been very poor, so you can never tell. The hammer looks as if it could be very old , the shaft is not up to much but I will put a new shaft on it and generally clean up the head, it will be good for raising or planishing at the flatter end and ok for hollowing with the more domed end, I always get any interesting hammers I can find lol , I just can not walk past a good old intersting hammer lol. That old knife was only 50p and look at the wear on it, its got a stamp saying its hand forged stainless steel on the blade, it was too nice to leave rotting in a box full of brocken nasty cheap tools so rescued it , I will maybe never use it but can give it a home in a draw full of fitting draw mates
looks like you got some good carbide, the top ones look like thread cutting tips maybe ?

  Cheers Mick
Title: Re: Car boot sale bargain finds
Post by: S. Heslop on August 31, 2014, 08:30:29 PM
Yeah the top ones are for threads, which i'm pleased with finding. Planning to get a bigger lathe soon so they'll hopefully come in handy then.

I recently broke the hammer-habit myself. I've got a few useful looking hammer heads lying about that need handles, but i'll wait till I actually find a use for them before I worry about that.

I really should give the Hexham bootsale another chance, the one time I went there I was disappointed when every seller laughed at me for suggesting things like their bench vises were worth anything less than £100. I'll be driving soon so it won't be as awkward to get to.

Saw a few things at the Swalwell boot sale that looked interesting, but i'm trying to cut down on the amount of interesting but probably useless (to me) junk I buy since i've got no space left for any more.

Hi Mick, sorry I missed this post earlier.

Here's my planimeter, bought new in 1975 for $150. I think you got a bargain!

The head doesn't normally slide along the sighting bar, though it is held by a setscrew. But I think that would only be used for adjusting the accuracy. There is a test standard included in the kit you can see it tucked into the lower edge of the box. I've never adjusted it.

The pivot bar is fixed in length. You sight throught the glass magnifier, and there is a tiny set of concentric circles for a crosshair. This follows the outline of your drawing, and area is read off on the dials -- there is a coarse dial and a vernier.

I can't get very good pics tonight -- too dark, but if you want I can take better ones tomorrow.

In the box:

As it would be set up for use:

Ok Its not a boot sale buy BUT an Op Shop buy and freebie.

Scored a nice clean UK made Stanley No4 all in great order in a box $40 after a friends daughter asked me to check the photo out on FB as she needed a price to tag it and sell it.

LOML picked it up yesterday at her spinners group as the girls mum also goes there. One of the other ladies who huby passed away some time ago was clearing out some of his wood n tools books.
I have had a quick browse/flick through only at this stage but I think my favourite will be the Recycling Use and Repair of Tools

Interesting also is the Woodcraft Goes to The Opera this is a book of woodcrafters who were in attendance at an Exhibition in 1987 9th to 20th September the list of people who exhibited and their outline is whats in the book. I just noticed the Business sponsors on the reveres side many still around today.

Hi Steve, thanks for posting the photos of the planimeter, mine works with a tracing ' needle ' rather than the sight glass but the dial end at the opposite end of the arm looks like its not intended to be moved as plastic bungs over the fixing screws ?  I will post better photos soon.
Out of interest what did you use yours for , reading charts or have you found other uses too

Mick, yes, I don't think you are supposed to move that in relation to the arm -- that's only for calibration. It does travel over paper though.

I used mine to get submerged areas of design boat hull sections to calculate displacement via Simpson's rule or Trapezoidal rule, also needed for stability calculations. I was once a naval architect.

All done by computer now, I guess, though I'd probably still do it all manually with pen and ink on drafting film. Easier for me to adjust curves to suit what I like freehand than with a mouse, and also easier to work with a 30" wide drawing than a 14" wide screen.

If you google 'google planimeter' there is a superb free application that allows you to measure land areas from google maps. Not a lot of good from boat sections though !!!

Found a couple of interesting items:

a) is a thread chaser  - I think.  It has five positions each marked 38 which seems an odd number tpi for a thread. Can anyone shed any light on its use?

b) is a 1/2"  12 tap made by  J. Whitworth & Co Manchester - which is interesting because  the company was formed in 1874 and incorporated Armstrong Mitchell & co in 1897 to become Armstrong Whitworth. So this tap dates before 1897 (or soon after) and could have been knocking around in a tool box for 120 years or so :)

You can find areas and centroids of irregular closed shapes easily in SketchUp with a free third party plugin. I've never used it for boats, but have for R/C airplane designs.

Looks like everyone had a good day, it was nice and sunny , a big factor in the booting day lol.

This is my haul from todays 2 bootsales, quite a varied catch again consisting of : A pasta making machine £2........???? what I hear them say , ..............aye don't worry no pasta making here its for rolling out polymer clay for making a prototype for a carving project , the herb chopping knife £1 this is to chop the clay up too.      3 boxes of good Wurth woodscrews £5, two good old fashioned hand brushes £2, 4mm Tee handle Allen wrench 50p, Refco pipe clamp £2, Maun safety 12inch rule £1, 2 tubes of BOC silicon bronze brazing rods, 1.6mm & 3.2mm £6, a thin tube of Cuprotic 3.2 welding rods for copper I think £1 , some 2mm Rothenberger S2 hard soldering rods for Copper £2 and last but not least a nice rev counter from a Royal Navy type 23 frigate, it looks like it will be good for future project especially at £3.

The other odd ball thing was some books on Fungi for my mates wife , she is interested in this sort of thing and is laid up after an operation on her foot so these should keep her amused, or get her off to sleep , one of the two ! The other book is off Doubleboost for an old friend of mine who loves all things Roman, its a good 1933 guide to Hadrians wall, cheers John.

Glad I got out of bed this morning. I've been hoping to find a scope some day for about 2 years.

It's a bit rough looking though. Not sure if it actually works yet but I want to wait a bit before I try plugging it in. Looks like it was stuck in an attic for a while since it's got a few cobwebs with bits of tinsel trapped in them, and the crud on the screen appears to be bird poo. It's clean inside though.

I think i'll have to get off my ass and finally build those desk shelves i've been planning to for yonks, so I have somewhere to put this.

Good catch with that scope - its a storage mainframe so (if you can trigger it!) you can catch single-shot events. If I remember right its genuinely a dual-beam tube, and I think those are delayed / hold-off plugins.

Only thing with kit of that vintage is that electrolytic capacitors may have deteriorated & may need changing.  :zap:

I always wanted a scope, not that I had any use for one, or really the in depth electronic knowledge required to use one, but we had some in the physics lab when I was at school several centuries ago, and we also used them in the electrical engineering lad at college, where we used to record the number of HFT events on the mains supply in 24 hours (except when the cleaners used to ignore the "LEAVE ON" notice and turn it off) and I found them fascinating. That looks like a really nice bit of kit, have fun with it! What do you intend to do use it for?
Phil.

Yeah the guy said it was one of the early storage ones. I think i've got to do some reading up on how to actually use the things, and buy/make some probes before I can really check if its working. From a quick look visually the capacitors look okay, haven't leaked, so hopefully they're still in order.

I've got no real in depth knowledge on electronics either. I've found it difficult to find good information; most textbooks are theory heavy and barely talk about applying the stuff, and there's alot of nonsense in general on the internet about electronics engineering.

I'm hoping to use it to build a synthesizer some day (when i'm not as busy!) to learn electronics and they seem fairly essential for that, but from watching videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bc5HRF7zjiA#t=48m32s) of various repair work work they also look fairly handy for chasing down faults and other general stuff.

Amazing haul for a tenner, John!

Scope update: Replaced the euro plug on it, and switched it on. The screen flickered but nothing after that. I'm assuming that even without probing anything you should be seeing a line. So that doesn't bode well. It's all very modular though and everything pulls out for easy access, so hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to find the fault. I tried all the obvious stuff like checking the fuses and looking for leaky caps. Found a manual for it too, so i'll read up on that and look up some other scope repair stuff before I try figure out whats wrong with it. Hopefully it's just user error and I need to press a switch to see anything!

I'm far from being a scope expert but I've owned many since my Telequipment S51 about 42 years ago.

Try the following:

Make sure the storage is switched off.

Try pressing the Trace Locate button. Hopefully something may appear.

There's a square wave calibration output underneath the Trigger Level knob. Take that output and plug it in to one of the Inputs. (Don't worry about a proper probe at this stage.) Adjust the Volts/Div to 0.5V/Div; Switch the Trigger to Auto. Adjust the Vertical Position knob to see if anything appears on the screen.

Good Luck.

Phil.

Expert or not, you got it working. It was a mix of everything at once I think, storage was switched on, the intensity was set low (doy), and it turns out it takes a few seconds for the tube to warm up and a line to appear. Since taking this photo the power light also decided to start working again.

Thanks for the help!

Edit: Had to take it back downstairs. Something about it is making me sneeze like crazy. Only thing I know i'm allergic to is cats, so the previous owner must've had a few about and dust settled inside. I'll have to blow it out with compressed air or something.

Hi Lads, this is my haul from Sundays car booting, I was with John and had a good day too.

As you can see quite a good engineering related batch today, the lathe tools are 25x25 type for the big lathe some with spare tips too and a parting tool with spare blades and tips, the boring bar is 25mm and a good length, a couple of decent DTI's and a Noga mag base plus various taps, calipers etc.

Ther is a nice old Weller 100w soldering iron and a Burgess Vibro tool engraver, a good old powerful heavy duty thing not like the Sh** you get today , its even in the original box !, a couple of de burring tolls with spare blades.

This is the best DTI , a Rambold German made 2 inch travel guage, I have never heard of them but its good quality and feels heavy. I think everything in total came to £60 or a few quid less, so well happy with the days goods.
  Cheers Mick.

I found this small cube at my clubs table top sale, I've been after one for three or four years now but they either go for silly money on ebay or get snapped up at shows in the first hour at shows, but it was my lucky day I was first through the door and my money in the box before any one else could snap this rooster up.

It's been well made and is perfectly square its threaded 5/16 BSF which is no problem, and its just the right size for my small mill.
