Title: You can blame John a.k.a bogstandard for me being here!
Post by: John Hill on February 16, 2009, 03:39:45 PM
  John gave me some good advice on another site when my lather first arrived and I followed him here!

I have a modest workshop in New Zealand but practically no experience to go with it.  My most recent acquisition has been a lathe from the Great Chinese Generic Lathe Company, it looks like this one
(http://precisionmatthews.com/sitebuilder/images/pm1236ED-450x339.png)

So far I have made on it:

1. a left hand thread on a piece of water pipe (that was a mistake, it should have been RH!)
2. a morse taper and mandrel from an old Isuzu half shaft.
3. a adapter to connect my Pentax camera to a 500mm f1:4 Sigma mirror lens
4. a few buckets of swarf.

Hi John and Welcome

We blame John for lots of things.... Showing people the way is just one of them

I've seen one of those generic lathes somewhere before..... Can't quite remember where!!!!!

I like the sound of the camera lens adapter..... I'm interested in pic's of that one and as you may already know  :worthless:    :)

Buckets of swarf..... Cool, I've made a few of those too in recent years.... I have two polished ones on display on my 'shop floor

Have fun, and please do take the time to share your project pictures.

Ralph.

Ha.... Stew hit the send button first!!!

Oh and the pic's banner, it's just fun.... Start another thread for your pic's in the gallery at your leasure

We blame Bog's for everything weather he does it or not.  :D

Glad you followed John here. I'm sure you'll like it. We have a light air about us here and love to  :poke: at each other to past the time of day.

But there are rules and I see you've followed the first rule:  :worthless:

The second rule is that you will get  :proj:

And you need to pass this  :mmr: on to others of the same interest so they will follow. The collective is watching you.  :borg:

Oh, one other rule all  :offtopic: subjects are to go HERE (http://madmodder.net/index.php?topic=734.0) Which is manditory reading.

Again a warm welcome John.

I see I got beat posting a welcome again, darn.

Regards,
Bernd

Good one Ralph.

Actually, I did make something else.  The first cutting tools I got (which were fashioned from drop forged Plasticene) were rather small for the tool holder and I hated the idea of always shimming them up so I bought a 16mm tool holder.  Well the lathe specs did say 16mm didnt they?  Huh, as you all know that put the indexable cutting chip too high, by about 2.6mm.

So the first thing I made was a fly cutter to trim that tool holder, worked like a charm, too good in fact so I still need to use a shim, but only one! ::)

The second thing I bought was a parting tool which I confidently put in the tool holder expecting to trim that one too.  The fly cutter would not look at it so out came the trusty angle grinder.

Actually, I did take a little care, I put a stop on a 3mm drill bit and drilled a number of precise depth 2.5mm 'divots' all over the surface to be removed then went over it with the angle grinder being careful to leave just a trace of each divot.  Much to my suprise a file made a moderately easy task of finishing off as I fine tuned it until the cutting tip was exactly centre.  I can chop through anything now.

Welcome John,

Nice to have found you made your way over, and you are murdering metal with a passion.

The lads on here will run your a**e ragged if you don't tell and show them everything you get up to.

We get things done in a very light hearted way on here, so mistakes mean absolutely nothing.

You can have 100 failures and only one success, but you will still get praise for it, because you are trying.

It isn't all engineering on here, there are all sorts of projects going on. If you can help or encourage on any of them, it will be appreciated by everyone involved.
