Title: One hand operated depth gauge

I came across the design for this depth gauge in a 1920 ish American Machinist magazine, it can be use with one hand.

You can salvage a spring from a liquid soap dispenser

to use simple press the rod to depth

then with your caliper zeroed on the bar, simply take the direct measurement of the rod
