Title: Hand Tapper
Post by: Bernd on August 09, 2011, 11:23:15 AM
In the building of the Shay there are many holes that will need tapping. Some will need to be done by lining up by hand other can be done on a tapping stand.

I came across this simple design in the October 1997 Projects in Metal. I didn't follow the exact design so I could get it done fast. Here are a couple of pics.

Simple and effective.

Thanks Rob.

It was a neccesity. Works great to. One of these days I'll have to build a better one.  :)

Better make it one of those days waaa....y down the calender. Haven't you got holes to drill, trucks to build etc. Mind you, If you wear this one out I guess we could allow you to replace it with a better one.

Are we having fun again Bernd?  :D :D

Cheers

You guys are to much.

I guess I should have said a more "complicated" one.

Working on a bit of tooling for the Bridgeport right now so I can mill the cast iron. I'll report on it as soon as I get a bit of time.

Nice day here today so have been outside playing with the Kabota moving stuff. Trying to clean up in front of the house.

I'm a total noob to the site.  I just found it and it seems like a happy home for me since I'm a little obsessive about modding my tools -- although not nearly as much as others.  Not being able to weld is a double edged sword...

I'm sure I'm way past the active feedback time window this thread but...

Nice job on a simple but elegant tapping stand -- my two favorite features of a mod.   Can you provide a little more info about the chuck like how it grabs the tap and how it grabs the shaft?  It looks like there's only one screw on the tap which would lead me to believe that the tap would often sit off center.  Perhaps I'm misunderstanding or maybe it's not a problem since the work seem like it can kind of "float" in X/Y which would give it the freedom it needs to move around.
