Title: Spur and pinion for RC truck the analog way
Post by: tapkoote on March 10, 2016, 11:41:38 AM
I offered to cut some gears for my buddies truck.
It’s been many years since I’ve done it and had to retrieve the indexer and instructions from the dust. It took a bit to retrain my brain and test on some plastic scrap.
The original ratio was 16/48. or 3 to1
My cutters are 20P- just to make the math easy.
In order to hit the gear diameters I’d have  19/56 or 2.5 to 1.
He said that it be fine. But I had to order a #6 cutter. Since I wanted to get this done, before next years snow, I ordered one off flea bay, even though it was 1 inch bore.
I found in my little gear cutting box a one inch arbor that hadn’t been finished. Some how 20 years ago I thought I might need one-I guess? I put it in the lathe and sized the clamping end. Fit a collar and a drive pin.

I hacked up a piece of aluminum plate, drilled some holes, spun it into a gear blank, which fits the drive dog.
I'll add more later.....

Got started on a slow tortious journey towards new gears.
Since the drill press isn't built for side loads, my cutter acts as a one tooth cutter.

I learned something about those multi tooth cutters.
Higher spindle speed, and they behave better.
Went from 480 rpm to 2175 rpm.
Much nicer.

Thank You Eric
If I wasn't so old and cranky, I'd learn the language of computers.
Tonight between the second and third periods of a hockey game-
I cut 18 teeth/spaces in 19 minutes.
Thats more fun than typing.
