Title: New from new?
Post by: russ57 on November 03, 2018, 09:29:36 AM
Digging holes, but my post hole digger can't quite lift dirt from the bottom. You pull the handles apart to grab a handful of dirt, but the  spread is too wide for the hole.

So, buy a cheap one, get out the oxy, and...
Now they open less, but can still grab from the bottom...

The blue are the original fully open, the green are the new ones.

Not as good for digging but better for lifting.

I have a pair of those, and neither have the weight for proper digging, but are ok for cleaning up a hole bored with a hole borer.

I've borrowed 'proper' ones in the past where the 'spades' were made from a decent thickness of steel and with a lift and plunge action would even dig our heavy clay.

The only 'mod' that I made to mine was to drill a hole in one of the spades so that they could hang handles downwards from a nail.

Otherwise they fall on the floor like a drunken giraffe

This is what I use for the digging bit at the moment...
An aldi special, runs happily off my domestic air compressor.

I also have a borrowed powered post hole borer, but it's a two man job, preferably two men not including me. I have rocky soil and when it grabs it can do one an injury.

Not sure what I'm seeing there Russ, is that really an air powered narrow spade? Never seen one of those before

Yep...

We (aus) call it a 'clay spader'. It's quite thick, maybe 6mm. I've used those with full size jack hammer and a slightly smaller one on an electric demo hammer.

Also has standard points, chisel, plus a "tile lifter" which is a very thin square flat blade.

Great for aud150.

The only problem I had was the air coupling originally attached directly to the handle started leaking very quickly. The problem seemed to be the weight of the hose with the vibration caused the little ball bearings in the lock collar to indent into the body.

I put a short whip hose on, and so far so good.
