Title: First effort on lathe
Post by: Bangkok Mick on March 30, 2013, 06:43:27 AM
Hi again,

I joined this forum a couple of weeks ago having just bought my lathe but with work and traveling have only just got it set up. Now bolted to a bench in the utility hall I can start on some practice pieces, my first effort a piston and barrel assembly of no particular design but turned out better than expected given this is my first attempt. Will post my results as they are produced and critical advice welcome.

Cheers Mick

Looks like the start of something interesting?  Can now become part of something else   :poke:

Fun making bits from nothing innit Mick?  :dremel:   :)

Hi Ralph,

Yes fun from the start, hope to enhance my skills until I can create my own engine but time will tell. Cheers Mick

Hi Mick,

We all start somewhere. Looks like you are off to a good start. Just watch the swarf on the floor...

Well you've got 3 bits made already Mick, Soon have the rest done  :)

Have you got any engine plans sorted?  I can dig out some links if you like? lots to look through :coffee:

Hi Mick ,,,,,,,, well your off the starting blocks   as others have said we ALL had to start  somewhere ,the more you use your lathe the easier things will become  :dremel:

What lathe tooling were you using on the brass ?

Brass and copper are not the easiest things to turn without digging the tool in, so well done for getting those parts made.

Nicely done Mick!

Just making things to fit other things, is great practice, for when you know what you need to make, to fit what you've made.....   :D

It's great to see you progressing!

Tanks for all the positive comments. I have a disc with small engine plans, once I have acquired enough tools and practice I will start on a small project and post results.

Cheers Mick

Nice work!

Welcome to the slippery slope of expensive machine tooling

Nice work

What you've made so far looks very much like most of a pump centre - telescopic with a spring in the cylinder, pointed centre on each end - for centring a centre-punch mark in the 4-jaw chuck. One end runs in the punch mark in the work, the other in a punch mark on the toolpost, adjust until the pump centre shows no runout on an indicator, then you have centred the work in the chuck

It's a good first project for a new lathe, and a tool you'll use all the time - and you've almost finished it already!

Welcome, and thank you Mick... You've made me really appreciate the space that I have, despite not being as much as I'd like.  If the bug bites you hard, you might just need to find a bigger room to put those machines in!

Nice start there Mick.  My wife would kill me if I put a lathe in the house.  Mind you, trying to put my lathe in the house would actually kill me!
