Title: Axle case spreader and seal press
Post by: kvom on February 25, 2012, 11:18:02 AM
The inner seals on my Jeep's Dana 60 axle were old and leaking.  Since I also needed to get the ujoints rebuilt, it was a good opportunity to replace the seals as well.  After breaking it all down, we couldn't get the locker out of the axle as it was too tight a fit.  The solution here is normally to use a case spreader, which will widen the axle case by a few thousands.  However, the axle has both a truss and a bracket for a steering ram that would prevent a commercial spreader from mounting properly.  So here's the booty-fab solution:

The seals got pressed in with the press tool as shown.  I turned the diameters to fit both D60 and D44/D30 seals.  The shaft is just a length of 1/2" all-thread with a nut loc-tited on.
