So, With the new board, we need a few things to give us a more polished web presence. One is to replace the simple machines forum logo at the top right. The other is to create a small icon that you see in the tab of the browser...
How about a contest or volunteer?
-
 You beat me to the suggestion Eric
How about letting members submit their suggestions in a thread for a certain cut-off date. You then choose the top X (you're the boss ) and then have a poll ?
Do you perhaps have some guidelines for image size for the image to replace the SMF logo ? - and any other guidelines as to what you'd like for the picture to fit the MadModder image.
I wish I had an idea, but I'm not a very creative kind of person...

A lot of people post pictures of various projects. Throw one of those up with a different one every month. Somewhat like HMEM does for engines. A button to delete it from view would be useful too. It's a PITA to have to scroll down each time just to start reading what you want to.

Given the forum name, a clip from the film "Young Frankenstein" would be completely apropos!
-
having recently watched night at the museum 2 I think a bobble head Einstein should be in it somewhere.
-
Eric,
I like that avatar. I've seen that somewhere before. Nice and steampunky. :D
I was looking for something like that since it gives the impression of something that was Madmodded. I have three pictures that I snagged off the net. I don't know if they could be used becasue if copy right. They are from the South Bend company and one is from that Japanesse guy from Crab Fu. I've attached them to this post.

Something simple, like crossed ball peen hammer with visegrips and a roll of duct tape underneath with the name in a curve like smile under it all.

If you're going to mention Duct Tape you have to mention Red Green. You can't have one without the other.
Cheers

Red Green I use to love that show wish they would show that again on a station here. :D

How about a Borg cube :borg:

How about just a hammer and anvil?
-
What was the name of the machine that will generate really long, Almost lightning bolts of electricity in those old horror movies? All mad scientists had one of those. Ya gotta have gears too, Lot's of gears.
Pete
-
how about a mad scientist standing over a lathe hooked up all the gadgets like Frankenstein with a caption saying its alive :mmr:
-
I am thinking, the name MadModder, why not Alfred E Newman with a lathe :dremel:

Great idea but it won't happen with copyright laws.
Pete

I am not sure about copyright issues, but I recall a setup of gears of all shapes and sizes that did turn very smoothly and nicely. They were at the time the intro to an old technical program during the 1960s and -70s in Sweden.
Something like this:
http://svt.se/content/1/c6/52/56/30/teknisktmagasin_430.jpg (http://svt.se/content/1/c6/52/56/30/teknisktmagasin_430.jpg)
The text across was the title (in Swedish) of the TV program.

I like the gears.
I may ask my co=worker... his GF is a graphics artist. she may be able to come up with something
-
Gears would be nice  . Plain round ones can be pretty good, particularly if they rotate like here:

Talking of logos can anyone tell me what the squares of varying colours and numbers under the posters name represent?

Talking of logos can anyone tell me what the squares of varying colours and numbers under the posters name represent?
Yellow = Member
Blue = Moderator
Red = Admin
The number is based on your "level" AKA 1 square 'newbie', 2 Squares 'JR Member'. And the only thing that counts for that level, is your post count.
Eric
-
Ahaaaa. Thanks.
-
He's lying to you.
Yellow is caution. As in, don't listen to these guys, they're all full of bull sh baloney, and are not to be trusted.
Blue is cold, whether it's physical (must be on blood thinners), malfunctioning heating/cooling systems or just poor circulation is up for argument.
Red is really, really angry. Look at his sig line, it spells it out right there.
-
Ahhh.... The truth comes out.
-
Ok.....................Then gears made from Bull S..t :)
Pete

Hi,
I could send you a photo of me ............ I'm a bit mad :ddb: :ddb: :ddb:
Will that do?

Picture, if you will, 'Doc' from 'Back to the Future' standing over his modified 9 x 20 lathe exclaming "This baby is wired for a Million Gigawatts!"
Ya I know it's not a logo, just had to share the thought.

Bumping this one up again as I found a Youtube piece on the non-round gears I talked about earlier. They were used as the intro to the Swedish TV program "Tekniskt magasin" a technically popularized show describing all storts of technical inventions and contraptions.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zbSvdC-0Bc&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zbSvdC-0Bc&feature=related)
Hope this gives an idea of a quite nice gear solution.

I am wondering what happened, seems to have died.
I think a logo would be nice. We just need one that's all :poke:
DaveH
-
Well.. I got the icon going a few weeks back. Working on the logo as I have time (which isn't much!)
Eric
-
Eric,
I noticed the Icon - pretty neat
DaveH
-
Eric, what size (pixels) are you looking for in the logo? There's a reason why I ask.
-Trout
-
Good question Trout  I know to. I'm out.
Good luck. You can do it. There is a lotr of fun stuff now but it will settle down and I hope they get the rules and specific requirements down pretty soon.
I never noticed the top right of the forum before Eric.

I am not 100% sure Dennis... I will have to look it up. Basically, I want to replace where it says "simple machine forums" in the upper right.
I was thinking of something along the lines of the favicon geared "M" with the rest in a cool script
-
First Pass. Font can change, obviously. I know it's not like the favicon but I worked it up before I asked. :hammer:

Hi,
Can anyone comment?
But first Dennis must promise he won't come to South Africa and beat me up
DaveH
-
Holy c###! I like it!
I have your permission to use it?
Eric
-
Yep, I quite like it,
except I think MadModder should be one word :dremel:
Just a thought
DaveH
-
You mean "madmodder" in the caliper instead of just "mad"?
Either way... I think would look good.
-
Eric,
That's correct but it should be spelled correctly "MadModder" - with the two capital M's.
May be Dennis could make it look a bit squashed or something ???
You have a very nice talent there Dennis
DaveH
-
Thanks guys. I'll work on it a little tonight and come up a few variations. I'm thinking the whole title within the calipers might spread the jaws so far apart they may not look like calipers anymore but we'll see.
Eric, of course you can use anything I toss out.
Dennis

Thanks Dennis!
Maybe raise the "Modder" part up so it is inline with "Mad" while keeping Mad in the calipers?
-
Here's a few more. I think the whole name fitting into the calipers turned out better than I first thought it would. Eric didn't see your latest until I uploaded this. Let me know if you would still like to see that.

Dam clever that Trout. I honestly think either of the top two would be good. Proper english as opposed to chinglish would dictate two words as the use of the capitals precludes it form being one word. :palm:
but what would I know  I'm just an old bugga educated prior to computers
Pete

Very good Dennis,
Go on Eric choose one
DaveH

One more round. Thanks guys.

Yep, I agree the top two look the best, and the one with the red Mad Modder looks good. (That is the top two of the group of four in post #41)
Just my 2c :med:
DaveH

Dennis,
You're the artist, do you have a preference?
DaveH

Make the lower case "d" micrometers!!!
-
Ok... I like the 1st one on post 41 and 44... The black letters. Either of those 2 are really good.
They just hit the spot on what I think works for us. Now I just gotta figure out how to change it :smart:
Thank you Dennis!
BTW, SWMBO really likes the very 1st one!
Eric
-
Trying one on for size... I think it looks good. :headbang:
-
I like the top one in post #41 but any are ok with me. Eric, if you need a version in gif, png or other (so you can make the white background disappear) you can email me. I updated my email address.
Or if you need me to resize while still a vector graphic (retains highest quality).
Dennis

Sent you 2 PMs Dennis!
Eric

Now that looks the muts nuts :headbang: :headbang: nice going Dennis
Rob

Got it in one Eric. :nrocks: Trout you are the man worth all that Eric pays you. :) Should double it

Very nice that, but will some of the younger members here know what it is without a digital readout  :poke:

Does older ones get it if it not in fractions
Like the logo with mauser and upmilling. Reply #44, but both on that picture are good.

I reckon you should move the "Modder" text down about 5pixels (maybe so the bottom of the text is at the same level as the bottom of the jaw of the capliper) - that way, when the background goes, "Modder" will sit nicely in the darker blue section of the background, the caliper almost bang on the centre line, and "Mad" nicely above.
I'm glad you had better luck here than "over there".

I like it

I must be middle aged then,, can't do fractions  :bang: but work with metric non digital kit.
I like the the bit on #44 'global model making community' perhaps that could be included just as small text along the caliper ?
Steve.

I like the new logo but...
I prefore a little smaller logo and insted of the white background transparent color.
But, it's just me. :coffee:

:nrocks: nice job dennis and good choice by the adm.i think it looks real good simple and real affective.again nice job. jonesie

I also think it looks very good, well done! :headbang:
But of course I have an extra idea :palm: if the white background were transparent instead the logo would really fit the background nicely. Or?

I think its great as is, especially if the background can be transparent
......I like the the bit on #44 'global model making community' perhaps that could be included just as small text along the caliper ?...
Global Community - absolutely
Model Making - I would definitely vote against this - MM is about far more than Model Making
Dave
-
Thanks for all the nice comments, Guys.
I sent three versions to Eric for eval.
AdeV, thanks for the suggestion to move the text down slightly, it was a good one. All the suggestions from you guys are good for that matter.
The upmilling graphic I threw in just in case Eric wanted to expand on it and maybe use in the upper right corner or something. It was just the result of a brain infarction.

I like the idea and the picture... we would just need to change the wording.... :med:

Dennis
I liked that logo last night when I saw it and was going to comment on how much I liked it but I had guests so put it off till later. Imagine my surprise when a few minutes ago I checked in for the first time to day and saw that it is the new MadModder logo. I like it. Congratulations and thanks Dennis.
:) :D :) :D
Cheers

I agree entirely it was mainly the 'A global .. making community' that worked for me but how do you express to a wider audience what Modding is. Maybe 'a global makers community' :coffee:

Verry well done Dennis I like it a lot , but is it my pc or could Eric move it more central then we could have it even BIGGER.
nice job chaps
Peter

Nope it's there Glen. You may have to clear your browsers cache.
Eric
-
The logo is cached quite firmly, it took one of my machines several days to figure out it had changed, and another day to work out it was a different size...
-
k

But the logo is prettyful and larger than life! I mean pretty and beautiful.

OK, late to the pary again.
That icon, YAH  I like it muchly.
