Title: Smart and Brown 1024 Lathe Clutch
Post by: southerscale on April 12, 2019, 08:33:10 AM
Could i ask the forum where I should look to resolve an issue I have with my lathe . I put some gear oil in the headstock as it had not been maintained for a long time it was at least 68 viscosity. That cured the lube problem but the catch is the chuck does not stop when the machine is in idle some torque gets through from the motor not much but some , I can stop it with my hand .
The manual says it should have Mobil DTE but not the grade . The machine now has 46 in it but still rotates as it did, what is the cure for this problem if anyone has had the same problem  with hydraulic clutches

The oil is causing the clutch to drag, not much which is why you can stop it with your hand. I don't know how the B&S clutch works, but either it needs tweaking to separate the clutch a little more; or, if it's a combination clutch/brake, it could be that the brake is worn and not effective any more.

Have a look on Google for Bracehand Ltd.   I think the name is Chris Hallibone??    They do all things S&B. Sure they will be able to advise.

Thank you for your replies . I will just change the oil to 32 grade as my first plan then work through your combined suggestions .

Grade 32 seems to be a success especially as the head stock warms up a little
