Title: Recent joiner
Post by: Alan Haisley on May 18, 2009, 10:33:11 PM
I am a retired computer programmer. In my former life, "big iron" meant IBM mainframe computers. I still remember though, stories my dad told about shipyard lathes and machine work in places like Bridgeport, Connecticut.

I have fond memories of Erector Sets, Heathkit, and, for older members in the US, the Knight Radio Lab from Allied Radio.

I will probably always be an underfunded hobby machinist and woodworker, but have had a lifelong love of machines and the machines that produce them.

Sometimes I have insights into problems but more usually enjoy reading solutions and thinking how they may be applied on small scale projects.

My first real metalworking project was a vertical wobbler air engine. Having read a good deal, I felt compelled to do an own design. When it was completed and ran the first time I put air to it, I was overjoyed and amazed.

Welcome to the collective :borg:

Got some pictures of your wobbler?

Alan, welcome aboard. If you have done any reading of newbie intros, you discovered a varied level of expertise,  experience and intrest. We tend to look at the mostly full glass and some of us are just overjoyed each morning when we are not looking at the grass roots :D :D
The only dumb question that exists is the one that isn't asked :smart: so, ask a lot of questions and have fun. :nrocks: :ddb: :nrocks:

Alan,

Welcome to to the collective. :borg:

Usally nothing is  :offtopic: . If it is we'll give you a gentle  :poke: , if that don't work then a  :wack: . If that still doesn't work then you will get a severe  :hammer: . Just joking.   (I've always wanted to use all those smileys in one line)

I've put numerous Heathkits together in my time. The first was a 4 channel radio control system. My Dad built one of their TV's and I have many meters that I put together. Still have them. Even built their O-scope.

Now about your wobbler. A few pics in the Gallery would be nice for us to look at.

So join in the fun and I hope you get  :proj: because after all  :mmr:

Welcome Alan.
It seems that with all this badgering, we are going to make it a stipulation of becoming a member, that you have a working camera.

You just get yourself settled in and feeling at home before succumbing to the pressures of the MAD modders on here.

So you have already had the grin and punching the air feeling. It does become addictive after a time, and you strive to repeat it as much as you can.
