Title: Making tools to make tools: Yoke style radius cutter.
Post by: NeoTech on August 08, 2013, 04:08:59 PM
So i need to cut som rollers to be able to bend som tubing to be able to make the frame for my bandsaw project.. Oh well enough. ..

I wanna make a yoke styled radius cutter mainly cause i find them more versatile then the "dreamcutter" and the other weird ball cutter..

But i wonder if the yoke frame would be made out of aluminium.. And if not, could i cast a frame with embedded steelrods for support (i would heat bend som rod and put in the mold).

Or do i have to go the 20mm plate route and grind the shapes. *tedious*

Aluminium would probably work fine. There is not too much stress on the cutter while taking light cuts (typical of radius cutting)

FWIW I machined rollers for my brothers pipe bender using this fairly simple rig:

I see.. that looks .. sketchy but if it works it works!. =)

I thought i would make something that hold the cutting road in a bow, and then had a handle to turn the toolbit. But well then i make it out of aluminium and press brass bushings in it.. Sweet. =)

thanks.

That looks as a simple and fast way to produce internal round shape, thanks for sharing this video, will keep this in mind for future work.

Been noodling with making my radius turner.. Im going with the yoke style.. I hade a piece of 20mm S355J2 plate lying around so i thought it was a good start.. and a piece of coldrawn tubing..

So for so good (http://www.roughedge.se/blogg/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/20131019-223432.jpg)

Note, this is the progress for like 2 months while doing other stuff as well.. Idea is to put somekind of thrust bearing in the bottom and the top and use somekind of thread/bolt to get it to fix in the lower poistion and let it float in the upper... I dont know really i make as i go along..

NeoTech,

I like the road your going down, it sounds very familiar, I make things to make things. I'll be following you!

I find designing and making my own tools and workshop equipment most rewarding.
