Title: Lidar Build

Hello All

This week, and after about 4 months of weekends, I finally got the first rendered images from my Lidar project.  If you don’t know about Lidar, they can produce 3D scans and work a bit like radar but use beams of infra-red light instead of radio waves.   

I’ve now got a few hundred hours of footage to edit down to make the build video, but for now here is a demonstration.

Very nice David, what level of precision are you getting in the point cloud ?

I wish this had been available years ago, modelling marine interiors for refit you had to be a contortionist surveyor, using a single laser measure, and it took hours.  How fast are the scans ?

I’ve used the Garmin Light V3 module, and the data sheet claims update rates up to 650 Hz with the trade-off between accuracy and speed.

I’ve not done much experimentation with configuration parameters, but out of the box I think I was getting about 120 points per second with a flutter of around  plus\minus 3 cm on a wall 2 m away. In terms of scan speed, it’s really whatever you want, with the compromise between resolution and capture time.

Wow, I had no idea the sensors had got that cheap.  I saw a demo years ago and the package was tens of thousands of pounds at that time.   I will be watching this with interest.

I’m still working on the build video, but this weekend I thought I’d take the Lidar outside and try it out in the garden. Here is a quick video of the results.

Agreed. That is pretty cool.
