OK Chaps this is not going to be pretty so any one of a nervous nature look away.
When I did the key way slot in the pulley for my sub spindle I could tell I wasn't doing my machine any good I was putting a lot of load on, and as I've decided to remake the pulley, I'm not too happy with the fit, I realy need another way of cutting the Key Way. As I'm also suffering from project creep like Bernd, this is going to be a no frills job it'll look ugly but all I want, is for it to do the Job :hammer:.
OK gather the material together and put a rough plan together

Bits of garage door Thanks Ralph  (where is Ralph ) and 20mm and 30 mm bar and a off cut from a shaper job some one was doing that I piced up at the scrappy.
First job drill some holes in the channel for M8 cap screws, this is going to be the base.
Those garage door bits make great clamps Ralph got any more :D
Bolt the bit thats to be the ram guide to the base with M8 cap screws. sorry no pics of drilling the guide.
Drill and tap M8 a chunk of 30mm bar for the pivot.
The ram guide needs to drilled on centre: easyest way set it up square on the the saddle, bolt it up, and get it positioned and lock up the cross slide.
Centre drill it
(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Key%20way%20slotter/100_2466.jpg)
Then drill it with 8mm pilot then 13mm pilot and finish of with a 20mm drill
The channel was springing back so rigged up a jack to stop it. I may add some corner bracing.
Putting the 20mm drill through. I stopped the lathe and removed the swarf using a pair of pliers, it was as sharp as a razor, handling swarf is the only job I wear gloves for.
Hole drilled.
Should get it finished tomorrow thats if the boss leaves me alone, herd her mumbling about going to the Traford Centre (Moll) :(
Have fun

I cut a keyway on the lathe once and agree it does give one a feeling that they should be shot.....
Yes, where is Ralph, I was only thinking that yesterday.....

Ok home run
Maching the ram to size between centres
(http://i431.photobucket.com/albums/qq32/sbwhart/Key%20way%20slotter/100_2472.jpg)
Putting an 8mm slot in the end of the ram.
This end was also tapped M8 and one arm open up with a M8 clearance drill to take the pivot pin.
The other end was drilled down the middle 10mm and a M5 cross hole tapped to grip the tool.
The back link:- again this was slotted 8mm and cross drilled and tapped M8 to take the pivot pin, a flat was put on the other end with another 8mm pivot pin hole. Made this bit complete then parted it off.
Made a tool holderthis was just a length of bar with a 6mm cross hole, with a M5 clamp screwe down the middle.
This is the tool on the lathe.

You can see the swarf shaved off

This is the result of the trial run on the scrap pully

No-one else has mentioned it, but the wine cork in the tailstock spindle is brilliant! Beats the bit of rag I have keeping the chips out of mine. :nrocks:

from sbwhart: "The problem is I keep losing it and have to open another bottle."
Hm. What might the problem be in that? Too tight corks? :)

 I only just found this thread
Yep those are good clamping bits Stew... I haven't gotten any for a while now though.
Good to see someone finally found a use for those big black arm brackets though.... I do have a couple of those around still!
And to those who thought I was AWOL.... I was just resting.... Oh, and spending time re-building the car ::)
Very nice piece of kit BTW Stew
