Title: Tapping Stand
Post by: Dan The Man on December 22, 2013, 08:03:05 AM
This post will be my first attempt at a Project Log

We will try to Turn a 22.5" Ferm pillar drill into a tapping stand.
We have already take the electric's off and now struggling with taking off the front pulley, any ideas??

Look for a setscrew hidden at the bottom of one of the belt grooves.

Warm it up with a hot air gun and use a puller....generally works....

Good idea, will borrow a puller on Monday   :D

You might check there aren't 2 screws in there. Not uncommon to have one on top of the other in a 'locking' arrangement.

Dave

BTW Any reason why this is in ' Announcements & Issues' Shows etc??

Johns Idea worked but instead of using a puller we levered it away with screwdrivers
Title: Re: Tapping Stand

We then took away the safety shield

On this drill the coil is too strong to push from above so we need to take it out and weaken it

We then took off 2 of the 3 handles. I saw that we could use them on our lathe, as the tool change block needs a thin but strong item to tighten it and offen they bend and we need to make new ones.

Hi Dan,

See http://madmodder.net/index.php/topic,607.msg2864.html#msg2864

The method requires that your photos are hosted somewhere on the web (e.g. Photobucket).

Cheers.

Phil.

Thank You will try it

Right so we had a redesign instead of weakening the spring we just took it off

Then we put the case back on as a washer

We then realised that on the upstroke it would tighten so we had 2 put on 2 washers and lock them

Hi Dan
Looks just the right size for a tapping stand, good luck with the project.

Nice work, keep us up on all your mods. A tapping stand can be used for more than tapping.

Tapping stand or Lathe Only ?
Title: Re: Tapping Stand
Post by: Dan The Man on December 23, 2013, 02:39:44 PM
Back to work on the tapping stand

Right, so instead of using the rack and pinion we used the measurer on the front to support the chuck.  We used the bracket from the shield but first taking the Perspex off .  After we reassembled the spring mechanism on the front we realised that the spring was too strong so we are getting a new one.  That is easier to push from above.

Be careful when taking out the rack and pinion however.

Now instead of turning our own part that drives the tap, we used the old pulley, but first we needed to adapt it by sawing off one of the grooves. We then drilled a 6mm hole and inserted a bar in the top, so you can push down and turn the tap with more force. Here is the concept in an image.  :smart: . BTW to secure the pulley back on the shaft we reused the little bolt in the side of the pulley.

The base was a little rusty so I got some wire wool out and started scrubbing away, you might be able to see on the photo where I have cleaned :Spotless ??:

We then drilled a 6mm hole in the pulley

After we found 6mm for it.  Sadly, it was slightly too short we then put on the handels off the old drill for looks

Back to Work!!

We turned down the diameter on the bar to allow us to thread it http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t405/Toptracks3719/002.jpg.  Then we Araldited the small bar into 2 bigger bars then screwed on the handles.

http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t405/Toptracks3719/004-1.jpg

Right remember how we needed a spring we got one out of a cracker and it is the right size and tension.  but first I learnt the party trick.

http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t405/Toptracks3719/007-1.jpg

2 minor jobs to complete the project.

Hi Dan The Man,

I don't know if anyone else can see the images but I can't and I think you've clicked on the wrong button to insert an image. You need to click on the 4th button from the left on the bottom row (looks like a tiny Mona Lisa) which will put "img" and "/img" (both in square brackets) in the text and then you paste the image url in between.

Hope this helps.

Phil.

Reply 33 is the same for me - no images - just rectangles with nothing in them but a red cross in the corner. I can't speak for anyone else but I just tried looking at your posts on my wife's iPad and can't see the images on that either.

Cheers.

Hi again,

As others seem to be able to see them I looked using Google Chrome (I usually use Internet Explorer) and I could see the images! They were very small however - is that how you intended them to be?

Cheers.

I was using the 2nd tab across (flash)  it may not work for you if you have a outdated version of flash player. I will try to put one of the pics in this post

This time have put it in insert pic. Thank you for your help   :D

Now to finish we put a plastic handle on the top that can be used to apply pressure when tapping.
Then it was done, we may later paint it but not for now.  Thanks for the good support and  :mmr: :headbang:

Good Job::

Am I missing something?  What are you using to hold the taps?

I all ways dreamed about finding a four jaw 1/2 inch drill chuck.
