Title: Ruby stone/hone
Post by: PekkaNF on February 14, 2018, 03:42:48 AM
Not even sure what to ask

There seem to very diferrent ruby hones available. I need about 3000 grit fininshing stone and I used have one for razor knife, but stopped shaving with that knife and stopped sharpenning it. Lost all that stuff, so I have nothing to compare.

Now I need to polish some sharp edges and finish some hardened metal parts.

How is cheap different from expensive one? Pretty much all are synthetic and probably aluminium oxide.

Anything I should know or just jump into ebay specials?

Diamond paste on a lap would be my choice.

Try welsh slate.

It comes in various grades as sharpening stones.

I have a set at home. (At work at the minute) They have the grit sizes listed so I can add the grits I have to give you an idea later.

Plenty of offers on Ebay around £10 per stone.

Found a few references regarding the welsh slate. Seems to start at 8K grit. So maybe too fine for your needs.

The dragons tongue is estimated at 8k, the purple Llyn Melynllyn at 12k and grey Llyn Melynllyn at 15k.

Regards

Got one cheap rubby hone wrapped tons of foam. Edges are jagged, but it feels pretty smooth and straight. Have to try. Feels very different from japanese water stones.
