Title: Little lathe tool grinder.
Post by: dvbydt on May 08, 2018, 10:04:31 AM

As promised here is my lathe tool grinder. A compound table was part of the deal when I ordered my lathe but I had never used it. The lathe was single phase, so I converted it to three phase using a VFD. The VFD was a bargain and I got a further discount for buying two. The hunt was then on for a small, 0.25Kw, totally enclosed, 2,700 rpm motor. Luckily a local supplier had one at a good price.

The motor support was made from a short piece of RHS (square tube 0.125 wall) with end plates welded in. The compound was held to this tube with 4 M8 screws. Not wishing to have the lead screw on the long axis, I made up a lever attachment, which makes the grinder  easier to use. To keep the dust off the cross slide I made up two bellows from acetate sheet. Not an easy thing to do, had to get some tips from Utube! However, they spray painted up OK.

I am happy with the end result. The VFD means I can run the motor at the correct speed for both the grinding wheel and the diamond cup wheel.

A great use of available equipment; very nice!  Would it possible to do a video of it in use?  I'd like to make something similar for my Acorn retro'd ORAC.

Sure, I'll try to get a short video on YouTube - anything in particular you would like to see?

Setting up the angles on a lathe bit & the actual movements of your grinder would be great, thanks.:)

OK will give it a go. May not happen instantly but will happen.

Well, for once it looks as if I have conquered modern technology without it biting me!
Lets try a Ctrl V :-

Yea. That link should take you to a very short video of the grinder being used.

Great, thanks Ian.  That's a good little video!  I have all the bits'n pieces stashed in my shop to build one very similar to yours.  After seeing it, I need to nudge mine a bit closer to the top of the list.

Great, I am just pleased that the video worked! I wish you every success with your build.

Thanks for the interest.
Decided to make a dedicated grinding "cupboard". The venerable Wolf double ended grinder is mounted on a pair of drawer slides so that I can pull it out and lock it in position when polishing on the right hand side (Beartex wheel). Slides are cheap enough to replace if the dust ruins them.
At the back is a fishtail from my Vax vacuum to keep the dust flow away from me.
Lighting is provided by four LEDs - G9 base 240 volt 5W 340 lm. Plenty of almost shadowless light (and ideal for extracting miniscule brass splinters!).

dvbyvt, that looks handy. How do you lock the grinder in position?

(ps. smaller photo would help -- 800 pixels across max is suggested for this forum -- I can only see a bit at a time while scrolling)

The grinder is locked with a wooden peg going through the slide mounting into the base. I only has to resist grinding an polishing pressure.

The photos were from the original files - not from the temp file that contained the reduced size and edited photos.

How do I edit the posted photos?

Done.

I'm a moderator, so I'm not sure what buttons you have available but I think you hit Modify, then drop down to Attachments, open that up and your photos will be named with check boxes there. Uncheck the one you want to remove. Close. Then reopen in modify mode and upload a reduced size version, if you have it ready.

Is there any problem with vibration when it's extended out on the drawer slides?

Vibration is not a problem. It might be if the wheels were unbalanced,
I will try you idea on the photos, thanks.

Modify worked thanks but now they are small (my editing!!!). Ctrl + on keyboard will get them bigger.

Heh, I already had reduced them to 800 x 600 for you, so now they're doubly reduced.

Nice work,

I have been looking for some ideas and this seems to be one of the better ones to me.

Thanks for the post.

Say Ian, if you're still watching this thread could you please show how your cross-feed handle moves the table?  I'm a little dense sometimes.  I've looked at your parts pictures several times but the linkage movement escapes me.

I will reply but I am away this week. I will take a picture for you when I return.
The grinder is still working well.
