This was dropped of this week by a local farmer asking if I could weld it up and make it round :bang:

Yes should have said that in the post ,its off a 8 foot cut flail mower .
The other end is as bad, plus the bearings are retained by circlips which are missing and someone in the past has tack welded the bearings into the roller :bang: so all in all a right mess

Just the usual maintenance schedule for farmers. My advice would be to go on a long holiday.

By god Smiffy that is in see state, you must be keen, it looks like its been sculpted out of wet clay like a potters art piece.
It's a good job farmers do not have control of aircraft maintenance eh :bugeye:

I reckon cut the stub off and weld a new one on is about the only approach (unless you have a vast hoard of suitable rods to build it up with !)

New pin machined and welded in and fitted to machine
These type of jobs are quite common , I seem to get my fair share ,it keeps me off the streets and provides spending power for more workshop goodies

I am Amazed :ddb: that you could recover the original dimensions and remake the part.
I wonder (gently) what you would charge for this?

I don't do commercial but if I did it would be minimum €50 an hour plus materials!

Measuring is not a problem as the shaft needs to fit a new bearing and seal . The biggest problem is having a suitable supply of large diameter steel . I keep a large stock of EN8 up to about 50 mm ,bigger than that means a trip to a steel stockholder which is time consuming . I often mange to get damaged piston rods from hydraulic rams which are usually EN8 and excellent for making excavator bucket pins etc
That piece started at 80 mm dia and as its will get used I brought a 1 meter length. Cost wise is a bit difficult as not many people want to do this type of work as it can be time consuming

I have made a few parts for old tractors and ploughs the old Furgies and the like, been for mates as i am in the country and mostly do it
for nothing as i end up with the off cuts to use... but it all has to fit the s7 or Chester 626 ...I did get some very good quality cast iron sash
weights that i have made some good stuff from. So swings and round things as they say...as above it also keeps off the streets :thumbup:
I did get bigger stuff in the Harrison but the Lad has blocked it in the corner of the garage and i can no long get to it.. :doh:
