Post by: Chuck in E. TN on November 25, 2016, 03:26:49 PM
Anyone know if the body of this collet chuck on Amazon.com is hardened?I would want to add tommy bar holes.

Not definitive, but looking at the picture the black oxide on the chamfer and inside the screw holes suggests hardening and grinding.  That, or it could just be cheap Chinese black oxide coating.... ;)

I actually made a 7x collet chuck, but run out was a problem. I was trying to make it better when I discovered my weld of the 2 pieces I made the chuck from, had failed. Haven't figured out how to salvage it...

I mounted this a couple of years ago, it's an ER 40, I don't remember if those holes were in it when I got it or not, but I have since drilled more, it is harder than cold rolled but it is drillable.  I also made a lock that is mounted on the ways under the chuck, if you want pics,

Could you not re-make it from a single piece? I recently made a collet chuck from solid and though it took a whole day hogging off the material the end result (http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/threads/39202-Shop-Made-Tools?p=1075738#post1075738) was very satisfying.

Other than that I was looking at the construction of some concrete core drill barrels and the back-plates were made in two pieces then welded. They turned a fine thread on the stub and the plate, screw them together tight then weld all the way round.
