Title: Wierd characters
Post by: Chuck in E. TN on January 26, 2012, 07:06:05 PM
Why do I see so many posts with wierd characters inserted. One of my recent posts has a square inserted where an ' (asterisk) should be.

Hi,

I thought it was something to do with HMS Victory and the Battle of Trafalgar

Getting back to Chuck's original subject, I sometimes get the problem, and sometimes all is OK. With IE8, looked at one post just now where an apostrophe showed as a little "character unrecognised" square. Out of curiosity, I switched to Firefox, where the apostrophe looked OK. Weird, as Chuck said. Seems to show up on the following characters:
Apostrophe '
UKP sign     £
and maybe quotation marks " colon : and semicolon :

I'll see how those turn out when posted; they look OK as I type.

Andy

Edit: they all look OK, apart from the UKP sign in IE8. It's really odd that, as I add this to the message in IE8, the UKP sign above looks fine in the text pane, but I bet it disappears once I post this edited version.

Never mind, the missing symbol can usually be deduced from the context.

I suspect you would have less problems overall using Firefox or even Chrome.  Of course if Chuck uses FF or Chrome, that theory is out the window at least where it applies to this forum... ;)

I am still trying to figure out why this is happening. I think I know what the fix is, but I am not going to attempt it till off hours and i do a complete backup of the database  :zap:

Just for information  -  I tried 3 browsers in Ubuntu  -  Reconq (part of KDE), Chrome and Opera

The only one to display the UK pound sign £ is Opera. Seems to be browser compatibilty problems.

It looks as though you have got somewhere with the symbols problem, Eric. I've had a look at the new posts which have appeared, and those threads no longer seem to be showing the little boxes which were replacing some characters. For me, the  glitch seemed to be mainly with apostrophes and the pound sterling signs, so here is a test:

John's mother hasn't got flu.
In British pubs, beer can cost anything from £1.80 to £3.50 per pint.

Thanks again for all your efforts.
