Title: Oiling Myford Super 7
Post by: Xldevil on February 23, 2009, 12:41:58 PM
Hello.
I really love my new to me Super 7 lathe and even though it´s almost 29 years old,it looks pretty new( besides the cabinet) and shows no signs of wear.I think it never runs. Not even a single metall chip anywhere.Only that ugly thick grease ,that a lathe has got from the factory, was to remove everywhere.
The only problem I found is how to reach those lubrication nipples at the headstock pulley and at the back gear spindle. These nipples are retracted in their locations. The mouth of my oil gun is to big to get into the locations. But it works well at all the other nipples.
How can I manage to oil the two places?
Any advices would be very welcome.
Ralph

Get a decent oil can (pump type), solder a short length of 1/8" copper pipe to the outlet, on the other end of the pipe solder a finely tapered brass nozzle with a fine hole. By pushing the nozzle hard into the oil nipple it will push the non-return ball out of the way, seal against the sides of the hole & to allow the oil to be pumped in. On my S7 I can flush all the c**p out from under the saddle. The oil guns are next to useless even when you can get at the nipple.
BTW the soft copper pipe allows the nozzle to be easily bent to get at those awkward places.

Ralph,

Haven't heard back from you on your oiling problem on your lathe. Did you solve the problem?

Regards,
Bernd

Hallo Bernd.
No,I´m still thinking and investigating.
Myford told me to buy their pricey oil gun.
Until I´ll find a better solution,I´m staying with my syringe/hollow needle method.

Was just wondering if you had solved the problem yet.

Perhaps a picture or two to the collective  :borg: here. We might be able to come up with a solution to your problem.

Hi.
I didn´t manage to take my own pictures of the problem areas, but at least I found a picture of one of them in the manual.
Maybe it will help to get my problem.
I´m pretty sure one can see that there isn´t enough space to use a regular oil gun
