Title: Rotary Broaching
Post by: Bernd on October 24, 2011, 12:15:17 PM
Got this off a news group I belong to. Intersting approach to broaching.

 http://www.slatertools.com/sales-support-service/videos/rotary-broach-and-tool-holder-demostration

Perhaps one of our talented members can build one and do a build log?  :poke:

Bernd

I watched the video then came back to the post and was going to reply. Then I saw Robs reply. Man that guy is not only good but he is extremely fast. Bet you never figured on anyone doing it quite that quick.
 :D :D

Rob

That was quick or was it good timing.  It will be interesting to see when you are finished with the refinements.
 :) :)

Cheers

Just good timing  :med: ,,,,,, made it last Christmas (i think ) ,,looked and interesting project  ,so  thought i would have an attempt at making one  :dremel:

works ok ,,,,,,, but i screwed up the bearing fit   so i need to re machine one part .

Don't you just hate that when you see something that you think is new and great. So you rush out to tell the rest of the world only to find out that everyone else already knew about it. It has happened to me a few times too.

Cheers

Rob I would really like to make one of these. I hope I can ask a couple of questions without showing how ignorant I am? How do you get the tapered shape on the two main parts. Are you sawing off the shape as close as possible and then filing or grinding to get it to look good or is this done on a rotary table. Are you using two cheap bearings Would a thrust bearing also not maybe work better here as well. How much strain does it put in  a lathe to do a broach. Could this also be used on a milling machine to broach as well.
Have you made any broaches for yourself or are you buying broaches. This would be useful for making the odd tap handle that is obsolete in plumbing so it will only be used for brass.
would like to try and make my own broaches but I think it may be beyond a home shop ability. Square I can probably handle but I tried to make a 8 mm spline broach with 20 splines and was not successful. Would you have a suggestion as to how a spline broach could be made. Regards Eugene

Hi there Eugene

No problem , ask away  :med:

How do you get the tapered shape on the two main parts. Are you sawing off the shape as close as possible and then filing or grinding to get it to look good or is this done on a rotary table.
I used a R/T for the job ,,,, it can be done by hand just the same  :dremel:

.Are you using two cheap bearings Would a thrust bearing also not maybe work better here as well.

Yes i just used a couple of cheap bearing that i had at hand ,,,,, thrusts would be a much better job , now i no it works i will make a better job of it  :dremel:

How much strain does it put in  a lathe to do a broach.

Not allot in brass and ally ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the larger the broach the more grunt required  ,, i dig out info on that .

Could this also be used on a milling machine to broach as well.

Possibly never thought about it  :med:

Have you made any broaches for yourself or are you buying broaches.

Yes i made the broach myself ,,, i used Silver steel / drill rod  , water hardening   ,, worked fine on brass  ,, broke on stainless

This would be useful for making the odd tap handle that is obsolete in plumbing so it will only be used for brass.

Just the job  :headbang:

Still thinking on that one

Very Nice.  Can you elaborate on its function and use, how come you adjust the clamp bolts in 2 axis not one ?

Hi Joules

                  Joules

Did you not watch Bends video  :poke:  ,,,,,,,,,, its for poking odd shaped holes in things

how come you adjust the clamp bolts in 2 axis not one ?

Ease of manufacture ,,,, other wise you would have to devise some other way of keeping perfect alignment on one axis

Cheers Dave

It is amazing how synchronicity creeps in. The latest Model Engineering Workshop - No 185 has an article on construction of a rotary broach and the tools to use in it. Michael Cox has included all the drawings. If you are interested in rotary broaching, it might be worth a look.

Thanks Andy, that site has some really great stuff on it. Mike's mods to his 6x4 bandsaw in particular fixed a whole bunch of things that I should have fixed instead of moaning about them.
And now Mike has paved the way.

Thanks for pointing me to the site.

Hi Rob,
I know this is an old topic (just like me  ) How is the rotary broach you made - now in retrospect would you change any thing?
I'm thinking of making one. Maximum 6mm squ/hex.

Hi Dave

A bit late with the reply  , truth is I have only used it a few times so I cant really pass judgement . I would probably make it a bit smaller .
