Title: Chucks Aweigh!
Post by: Pete. on August 02, 2017, 06:00:14 PM
I'm getting quite a collection of chucks for my lathe so today I thought I would knock together a simple rack from plywood to hold them. It has room for 12 but currently has just 9 spaces populated.

It's pretty basic but it does the job.

Very neat Pete

I hope the fixings are good and strong, that could end up with some serious weight in it!

I would agree with Andrew. As the shelves are put together with butt joints rather than rabbit joints, consider adding a few extra screws.

Nice job Pete; might I suggest you put a smallish right angle bracket in ea. corner & one in the middle of the shelves at the centre point at the back... just that little extra bit of support...

It's plenty strong enough. I got the wife to sit on it for a test :D

Joking aside - I have dowels and 3" screws holding it together and to the back-board. I also deliberately spaced the holes so the smaller chucks are in the middle of the rack but on top of all that I stood on each shelf with my 92kg weight and it never even creaked.

A little sandpaper will help to keep the slivers to a minimum :zap:

I am sure you are right.

But if you have any doubt you could consider to cut and fit a thinner piece of plywood and glue it to the side pieces between the shelves: instant dado joint.
But then again, I am known to massively over engineer everything I am not certain about.....
