Title: Model ships
Post by: boatmadman on October 10, 2009, 05:37:43 PM
I have been told by a member of this forum some of you might be interested in a model ship I built.

Its a semi submersible ship, ie, it sinks the main deck below the waterline in order to load a cargo - a ship or oil rig, then re floats and lifts the cargo clear of the water.

There are no plans available to modellers for this ship. I started out with a set of hull lines on an A4 sheet of paper and a load of pics off the interweb.

This model, at 1:200 scale, is 1.4m long, 300mm wide and weighs about 15kg dry.

I used 4 reversible gear pumps, 4 pumped ballast compartments and 4 free flood ballast compartments.

This boat requires 7 channels to operate, 1 for each pump, one for main drive, 1 for rudder and 1 for the bowthruster.

Anyway, here it is. And just in case anyone starts wondering, its not for sale as I have just sold it to fund a milling machine from one of the members here.

Br,

Thanks for that, yes these ships are quite amazing. The stability of them when they submerge becomes a nightmare, its a really risky operation that doesnt take much to get wrong.

Very nice indeed.

I have seen TV shows on these types of ships but I had never considered what would be needed to make a working scale model.

Thanks so much for sharing.
