Title: Slitting Saw Arbor Material
Post by: DeanDK on January 23, 2018, 07:59:03 PM
Hello,

I'm purchasing some slitting saw arbors, and planning to make some arbors to suit.

I have a watchmakers lathe, so it will be WW thread collet. Is mild steel okay? I was thinking of making it from Silver Steel.

What are your thoughts on an ideal material for this tool?

Cheers,

Dean

If you're looking for more toughness than mild steel can offer, I'd suggest 4140HT.  Unless you plan on hardening, which is not recommended for a tool arbour, there isn't much point to using silver (tool) steel.

That said, mild steel would likely serve you just fine without any trouble.
