What makes up a modified watch?
There is a watchmakers course here in the states and I would love to take it. Only issue is, I don't wear a watch. I like pocket watches though.

:D
I was kinda referring to the watch case and bracelet so different from the norm like coated case and bracelet and other mods would be to change the hands, glass type and profile and dial etc etc.

Neat. Didn't realize there were people modding wrist watches.

What is the coating ?
-
Hi there,
DLC so a fancy PVD coating.
-
I like watches, infact I like watches a lot:
&feature=related
and I also have a bumper automatic Omega.
OK,I know not top of the range but they are all top of my range!!
I`d love a Patek Philippe one day but sadly don`t think it`ll happen.
Modified watches - hummm...more info needed. Is that something you have purchased or made. If the latter, then that sounds cool but if it was just shop boughts I`d be a little confused "why"? But each to their own and if you like it then that is what matters. The watch in the pictures looks great.

Nice Omega chap :D
Yep I had the mod done for a client of mine the watch does look very nice.
I basically stripped the watch done to it's bones, refinished all case and bracelet parts, satinised with bead blaster and then sent for coating in Switzerland then reassembled here.

She's worth a good £50-£70 secondhand.
If you need someone to fit a new battery I've got a £300 watch case opener set up.

£300 :bugeye: ,,,,, you must do allot of watches Bry
Rob
Edit ,,,,,,,,,, are they like old model cars ,,,, do you get more if you have the box ?
Note to self get rid of junk
-
The £300 was well spent means I don't need to worry about caseback slip.
If you want to sell her forward some better pics of case and bracelet and I'll ask a local 7A** collector.
The original box and papers always help.
You do know the RAF use to wear Seiko 7A** chronos?
One of mine:-

Bit of both.

Eric
I'm guessing "Dialithium Convertor" for DLC and an updated version of PVC for PVD (polyvinyl dichroic or some such)

Diamond Like Carbon and Physical Vapour Deposition.

Bry.
I just read this thread, I am intrigued!. Any more shots of watches you have and a little more information on the hobby.
I got a lathe at an auction that belonged to a clock / watchmaker he purchased it back in the fifties and he died in 2009 and i got most of his stuff, I kept the lathe and tooling but I sent along the way most of the weirdest dies, tooling and gadgets he made through Fleabays, this cat had some stuff I have never seen but knowing a little about his passion I am sure everything had a use, what I can tell you is this lathe was spotless and looked like it just came out of the factory, I would of like to have met the guy.
Anywho I am interested in clocks / watches so please post more info.
Rob, is it back in the draw or did you flog it? :poke:

Anthony,
Rob sold the Seiko to my contact that I suggested, the watch was worth quite a few notes.

Thank you for sharing. You have to love German engineering and their attention to detail.

Hi Guys,
Only just looked at this topic for the first time.
Does this count as a modified watch?
Ned
PS sorry if image is too big, I am still having problems with editing.
PPS I have one of those Constellations but mine is a '64, but still with its original little red box!
PPPS that is a full size human wrist behind the watch.
-
That Connie and Red box will be worth some money now.

Hi Bry,
So I have been told.
Did you like the Smiths pocket watch to wrist watch conversion?
Ned
-
Hi Ned,
Nope sorry I don't know much about Smith's watches, born in '75 so was brought up with Casio SS LCD watches.

Ned,
What do you reckon to this Diamond like Carbon coated Omega Bond Seamaster?
-
Hi Bry,
Nice.
I guess I shall have to find the time to make another custom case for a watch, but not to take something daft like the Smiths or inaccurate like an Omega, next time I shall use a Timex. I might have a window in about ten years time the way things are going at the moment.

Thanks,
That sounds a cool idea or maybe buy a brand new case and modify it theirs lots of decent accurate movements out there that can be had for a very fair price, Miyota 82** movements keep good time or Seiko autos etc etc even Etas etc etc
Didn't those old Omega Connies use an indirect seconds hand 55* movement?
Maybe base the watch case around a Eta/Unitas 6497 like below you could even buy the plain movement and custom finish the movement plates and then have a watchie reassemble the movement, any ways some ideas:-

That last picture says "Made in Germany", but on the watch itself, it's stamped "Swiss"...
-
Movement is Swiss but the watch firm are Deutsche! :D
-
Hi Bry,
I have to admit that the movements are a mystery to me, I leave that to a mate who is a former Omega employee.
Cases are a straight forward lathe and mill engineering project, no real skill needed to achieve acceptable results, unlike all those teeny weeny little bits in a watch that you need a microscope to see. Even watch faces are a simple 'puter and printer job.
On further thought, I do prefer a sweep second hand, so maybe the Timex might not be the best choice. As I said this project is nowhere near the top of the tuit list, in fact it is just about at the bottom, although with the warm weather the list is getting some attention.

Does this count as modded? :bang:
After I get some practice with the mill, I'll probably try and make a new case and maybe band for it, though finding a new crystal may be a challenge as I've never tried to source watch parts. The movement survived and it still keeps perfect time, the rest didn't do so well. :(

Hi all
I've been in to watches for quite a few years and though I don't generally mod watches, I did use to repair them (or at least, attempt to!!!)..
Here's about half of my collection,,,

Hi Andy
Strangely, I only wear one watch for most of the time
I set the time with our time clock at work several months ago and it has neither lost nor gained a second since :headbang:
