Title: I've got a big one!!
Post by: Ronkh on March 05, 2012, 03:58:00 PM
No. Not bragging but I did get this from work.

23" dia scrap flywheel.  This was going to be binned but being a scavenger , I couldn't let it go to waste. And yes, there are companies out there that still make/have and use flywheels!

Now my question is; apart from a massive finger wheel engine or more like a ruddy great big foot wheel engine; what could I do with this beastie?
I am  in no rush to build something here with this as I am currently building/machining a couple of beam engines, and a wobbler plus Elmers donkey engine and his Vauxhall one.

The pic is of it on my mill and as you can see, makes it look rather small. (The mill that is)!
I have plenty of good bearings that will take the weight/strain from when I used to work at McLarens F1 plus a lot of high grade ali from the same place. I am not boasting, it's just where I used to be so why not mention it?

Any suggestions gents? The madder the better!!

I am in the very fortunate position of being allowed to have an almost endless use of scrap material and machines to use at work but that is not unlimited!

Kind regards.

Ron.

Hi
Ron
Would make a good fly wheel for a marine engine
Or a massive wobbler :bugeye: :bugeye: :bugeye:

And yes. It does fit on the mill but as you can see, I am limited as to what I can do with it!

Kinfd regards.

Hi John,

Good idea though I think I would have to have the balance absolutely perfect, otherwise I could "wobble" out of the shed with the thing. It is a bit heavy!!
That's an 8 m/m cutter in the chuck by the wheel.

First idea is to get another one like it and make a Pug Mill.

What to do with a Pug Mill?

Crushed nuts ??  :palm:

Ron what do you think of the mill ? , how easy is it to rase and lower the fine feed on the quill?

thanks

Hi Peter.

The mill in general is okay but the fine feed?
You have to be wary of it as I have found that the spindle can stick while feeding down, and then it "jumps" down to where it should of been feeding to and it grabs the job!!
Not nice when this happens but I've now got a feel for it.
(I Hope)!!!!!!

Rob.

Nice cast wheel but I think that would crush my mill!!

BC.

One more of these and it wouldn'd be "crushed nuts".
More like strained nuts!!

Kind regards.

Ron

Hi Chuck.

Yep,
That's what I have been thinking of these past couple of days. I have some robust bearings and some decent sized ali. (Apart from a base which I think I will source from the ali scrap bin at work)!
All I'll need then are some robust thighs!

Kind regards,

Ron.

I can just see SHMBO at her next bridge party bragging about her new 200lbs spinning wheel capable of spinning 1" thick yarn at 600RPM!

You say this Flywheel is 23" diameter what is it width ?and what is the bore size? You could use this on a 6" scale Road Locomotive if the width is about 3"-4" say a Burrell or a McLaren, but you would have to build  one Do you fancy that?

Hi Steamman,

Sounds good. I'll get back on here with this idea and the sizes.
There will be some serious questions asked once I plan/collate them!
I have always liked the thought of making a McLaren engine as I used to work for the F1 team McLaren!
From one extreme speed to the other!!

Kind regards,

Ron.
