Hi all
New here just wanted to say hi.
After some guessing in the electronics section I was South African born but live in the UK.
I have a lathe and a mill used mostly to make the lathe and mill better/work again etc.
Started a stationary steam engine a year ago???? but still making the tools to finish it maybe 2022.

Welcome aboard Gerhard,
So you have been improving your machines, sounds interesting, please do tell us more... :dremel:

Hi Gerhart!
You`ll like it here.....

Hi Gerhard,
Welcome to the most informative and relaxed forum on the interweb.... Well I think it is  :mmr:
I'm sure your looking around, or have done for a while?
Post new topics and replys at will and remember there are no stupid questions.... A few daft and humorous answers though!!
We can sure help you get that engine finished.... A few pic's in the right area and we'll encourage you all you need and help you if need be..... There's a lot of talented guys on here... And a few trying to be... (like me!)
See you around the forum,
Ralph.

:smart:
I'm into steam myselve my first model was a beam engine, ther's a photo of it some ware on the forum, when you've sorted yourselve out pictures of what you've been doing would be great.
Have

I made a few modifications to the lathe -new topslide mount.
-two ball turning tools one that cuts horizontally around the centre and one that arcs up and over the centre.
-then I mounted the flex drive mini tool on the cross slide for cross drilling but now i have to mock up some sort of headstock dividing attachment????? Still in development.
I just like to make things mot all that fussed with wat it is. Started woodwork (furnature making ) as a hobby in grade school and tool building is a progression from there.
These days life is to busy for big projects so just lots of tinkering.
Will post some pics of these once i have figured out where to put them.
Gerhard (saving my sanity a little at a time.)

Gerhard,

Very sorry, that is no use at all. You have to be a full blown lunatic to live around here.

Welcome to the forum!
Many many informative posts.
As I have said before.. Artists in metal here.
Not a shop ripping out 39284987 parts from a machine.
Granted I could think of a few things I would like to be able to buzz out a few thousand at a time.... :D
Post new topics and replys at will and remember there are no stupid questions
Dont feel bad :) I ask plenty of questions that boggle the more experienced machinists.
Im a complete novice.. but Im making shavings and learning as I go. SO I will be asking plenty of the hard questions.
I take nothing for granted, since its all new. Most things I have to stare at it and try to figure how to do something. Then I ask, and realise there were 20 different ways to accomplish the same thing much easier.

This is my lathe in the study (yes I know I have a fab wife)

The new cross slide mount

And the second ball turner this modle is better for multiple balls of same size other one is better if just for one offs

The mini tool holder for cross drilling.

Thans Stew
Yes bought this one new got a second hand mini lathe (chester) before and it cost me far more to get it working again than a new would have cost - and I was never happy with the results I got. That one is waiting to become a future project. (CNC/DCdrive etc.)
Thanks for the info on the wiper motor will be checking out sources for these things in the UK

Pleased the info on the wiper motor got through, Mick who's just registered with the forum is the source of the convertion, so I'm shure he would help out if you've any questions.

Hey Gerhard.... Looks like you're another 9X20 user? Neat set up you have there
I've got to ask... The ball turner, is the second hole for the handle there by design or did you read the plan like I did the first time I made the turret? Wondered what had happened when I test rotated it!!!!
Looks like it will do the job nicely, is the screw holding the cutter post in on a flat? Can it be turned round 180' for concave cuts?
I like the little pencil grinder mounting, I have a similar grinder, Haven't got round to mounting it yet.... Do you use it a lot? What do you used it on?
Just poking my nose in :D
Ralph.
Just a side note, to see if your pictures are working well, use the preview button before posting.
Stew, are they appearing too big because your viewing them on your Ipod? mine cuts the side off a lot of pic's ::)
-
Hi Ralph
Made the upright part of the ball turner of silver steel (drill rod i think in US) and it can be rotated for concave. I made a second mount for a bent hande if I dont want to remove topslide when ball cutting but it limits a lot of things (dont think ill use it much).
Have only used the mini grinder mount for spot drilling marking - to dril in the drill press (marking out a PCD). I have an idea to make the same thing again but to make it so the hight and angle can be ajusted????? will think some first.

Hi Ralph
Viewed pics on PC and mac they're big I use size large on photo bucket these seem to fit ok. Just getting use to Apple mac, one thing I've found out that its got a spell checker that runs when I'm sending madmodder messages, don't know how to get into the dictionary yet. :borg:
Cheers

Gerhard,
I Am thinking I know what your saying about the curved handle, I was toying with the idea for the handle for the mini turner before the new owner changed his mind about it's fitting and use requirements (I've got all sorts of odd C-o-C's around here somewhere!)
Have you thought about a round cutter for the ball turner? It could be made very easily to fit into your holder design.
With the pencil grinder I think the adjustable holder would be the way to go... It would have to be quite ridgid if it was to be fully useable.... But I like the idea, could be good for small bores etc? It is quite easy to regulate the speed on mine, I assume they all have such adjustment?
One of those on an adjustable mount, a good selection of stones and cutters (and a stone dresser) and you could probably get some good results in small scale items?... I think it is on my to try list.... Got to be worth a go? :dremel:
Stew... You may have noticed I've been a bit of a dope and confused you with JohnS and his Ipod!!! :bang: Don't ask what happened there, I think I'm going to have to stop posting after 2am... This might let my brain recover!!
Anyhow, I am wondering if the widescreen monitor I have is helping me see the pic's with no problem? Mac and a PC.... You got one in the 'shop and one in the house?
Spell checker is no bad thing, I keep a dictionary next to my Comp' for the words that just don't look right! :)
Ralph.
