Title: One for Ralph
Post by: bogstandard on January 24, 2009, 06:16:15 PM
Ralph,

I have got the first one finished, only 39 more to do.

The rest should be cleaned up and bagged for despatch on Monday. Only about 2 months late.

That will teach me to get ill.

Well you see the thing is John... Quality takes time.... Specially when the tech' is ill!

Looks very nice and clean, have you got to test the seal?
Does it require a little test rig?

Only 39 more.... busy sunday then!?

You must be feeling a bit better recently? ... Well you must be a little, cause of what's in the pic'!!

A nice piccy of 40 lined up next then?  :headbang:

Ralph.

I think an edit is required... just so that people know.... it's a little valve

Looks like Bogies uses a lot of abrisive paper or checks to see if the finish on his turned projects is smooth.

I don't see any finger prints on his fingers.

Nice looking valve by the way, what's it go on?

Ralph,

They still have to be pressure tested, only to 30 PSI, just feed air onto the sticky out bit on the side and stick it into a bucket of water.

BTW, Ralph has been poking me to get them finished :poke:

Bernd,

Haven't had fingerprints for years, they never have time to grow back.

This is the longer version of the ones shown.

I wouldn't say so much as  :poke: ing you John.... More gentle encouragement  :whip:

How'd your self made deadline go?

or is it midnight tonight?

To everyone out there... These are so small in real life.... Very interesting to see them part made and be told a little about how they are repetitively made  :dremel:

Ralph,

Just taking a fag and coffee break.

I am half way thru pressure testing. The requirement is for leakfree at 30 PSI, I am wacking them up to over 100 PSI and haven't had a single leak yet. So it looks like the ground spindle tips rather than turned ones really work.

Then it is just a matter of inhibiting with steam oil, baggin' 'em up and into the snailmail this afternoon.

Finished and on their way.

I don't do line up bits, but here they are in a box, covered in steam oil ready to jump in the zip locks. See first pic.

The only thing not made out of bar were the tiny cast handles (silver soldered on) and a 001 silicon o-ring internally. All dimensions were held to 0.001", so all parts are totally interchangeable. The sticky out bit on the side was machined up and silver soldered into position. Spindle is stainless and the body and side thread are made from Colphos. The nuts on the bottom are made from brass hex.

And to cure Bernds fetish for fingerprints, the second shot shows that I am not anonymous, but do in fact have paw prints.
The spindle surfaces actually look a bit rough, but it is precision ground on the end, it is just that it is covered in steam oil.

The engines above are rather special, they are coal fired G gauge, rather than gas or spirit fired, which is the normal method of raising steam.

Yep, one days rest, then onto Darren's lathe.

Hobby is still about four or five jobs away, so if I can get them done, then little engines to be made.

Thanks for the comments lads.

So when it goes quiet on the Bogster front, it will be because I am doing something like this. Not ignoring you, just keeping the wolves from the door.

SD,

I have got hands like a gorilla.

You should see the floor around my lathe and workbench, where I have dropped bits and couldn't bend down to pick them up again.

Those valve bits in my fingers are 2" long really, so it shows what size my hands are. :D

Bogs Kong?  King Bogs?

As long as you use your hands to make instead of destroy, it doesn't matter how big yer mitts are.
