Title: Mounting polishing wheels.
Post by: NeoTech on April 30, 2013, 01:18:00 PM
I bought these cheap ass 150mm polishing wheels.. they came with.. well no bushing or mounting hardware.. I intend to mount these on a 1Hp electrical motor i have lying around but need some idea to secure that bloody thing to the shaft and properly drive it..

Suggestions? (photobomb me)

They should just screw onto a spiral polishing arbor - and screw off again. If you have no arbor just use two large flat washers and clamp the wheel between them.

Polishing machines often use tapered spindles like these (http://www.caswelleurope.co.uk/Buffing_Pages/tapered_buffing_spindles.htm) - think of a benchtop grinder with one of these in place of each wheel. These allow you to easily change wheels for a stiffer/softer wheel or when you change compound (I sometimes write the compound colour on the side of the wheel with a Sharpie to avoid cross-conamination, as the colour isn't always evident once its on a wheel).

Or you can use/make somethink like these fixed adapters (http://www.caswelleurope.co.uk/Buffing_Pages/shaft_extenders.htm)
