Title: Another one of those little mods...
Post by: websterz on June 04, 2009, 04:15:00 PM
...you wonder how you lived without for so long.

A couple scraps of brass and an hour of playtime.  :dremel:

Nice job, does the handle still allow you to turn it nice and slow in terms of a "fine feed"?

That was exactly why I did it. Now I have the leverage to turn a nice, slow and steady arc with the handle, rather than only getting 180* at a turn before repositioning my hand. I bored out a piece of nylon last night and the handle mod "worked a treat" as you fellas say.

It might look like a cnc pulse generator handle, but it sure don`t turn like one!

Further, extension handle modding, to come.....

Certainly makes the Z axis more manageable...... Similar to the other handwheels.

Won`t need to keep on engaging/ disengaging the drive dogs, now.....

Thanks for the tip!

And a fine job it is.  If you are feeling particularly energetic I suggest pulling the linkage cover off from behind the fine feed knob and having a look at the shaft. I don't know why they felt the need to use a u-joint there. I replaced mine with a solid shaft and it eliminated 90% of my fine feed backlash.

I will have pics of my newest mill mods later on today. I can't let you guys stay caught up with me for long! hehehe This one was more than a 5 Minute Fix. Actually it's two mods in one.  :proj:

Thanks for that Todd!

I have just been fine tuning the shaft/ front bearing alignment.
The bearing block is vertical, with the shaft heading slightly downhill to it`s wormwheel end. I elongated the hole slightly.

The u-j is firm, backlash free......

Drilled a couple of proving holes ........ Much improved!
